hey guys, new to diesel, just bought my first one about 4 days ago.
i want to put a ppe boost increase valve on, but dont know how it will work on a truck with only and intake. will it provide to much boost? would i have to tune anything? also, what if i put a bigger wastegate with it completely stock like this 2? thanks

without some sort of tune to provide more fuel to increase drive pressure, the turbo generally wont [produce more than about 22-25 PSIG of boost anyways. If you dont have or dont plan to have at least a tow tune installed in the truck dont waste your money on any kind of boost increasing device.

That being said, if you do decide to go through with said modifications, do not exceed 30-32 PSIG of boost pressure (read post CAC), as producing more pressure than this puts the turbo into a very poor efficiency zone, creates excess heat in the intake charge, puts the turbo at risk for damage, and is generally counter productive (IE the increase in boost pressure is offset by the loss in power due to the excessive heat).

right now just turning 17, and being broke after spending all of my commercial fishing money (i live in alaska), im looking for just cheap easy stuff. mainly just much better flow. what do you think of replacing the exhaust manifold on the drivers side? i just want everything to have as good flow as possible. i was considering doing a turbo horn. where could i find a good one?
think im goin to do a bully dog gt tuner, so i can moniter everything.
what is the most hp these stock allison 5 speeds will hold safely?

have alot of questions to ask..

Ok. Cut the exhaust right at the front of the muffler and put an elbow out the side in front of the tire. Get a short piece of copper tubing that will fit in the hose that goes to the waste gate, drill a 1/8 inch hole in the center of it, cut the hose and slip both ends over the tube, leaving the hole unlocked. Add some hose clamps and you have a boost increase valve. Look here, eBay, Craigslist, etc. For a used tuner, personally I would look for a diablosport or an mp8, but that's just my opinion. Dont add anything that claims to give you over 100 HP, because there are no cheap transmissions.

The statement in red, will do you no good. You have to have more fuel to create the drive pressure needed to make more boost. Furthermore, 1/8 is WAY too big of a hole for a crack pipe in a duramax. Granted you can just unhook the signal line completely in most cases and only see boost to 30 psi cause the actuator spring is weak, there is the occasional odd truck. Furthermore, i dont like this method as it allows unfiltered air into the intake system. And third of all, dont mess with boost pressures untill you have a boost gauge and pyrometer at a minimum.

The #1 mod for a Dmax is a tuner. If you post: Wanted - Used LB7 tuner cheap in our Garage Sale area, somebody will probably answer.

Turbo Diesels don't mod like gas engines do. Exhaust and intake are small (if any) gains, and tuning is a HUGE gain. Not subtle. Turbos are great at forcing air through restrictions.

Always start with tuning, then add supporting mods as money is avail.

To put this in perspective:

4" exhaust + CAI (intake) = 20rwhp max, usually less than 10rwhp. This is about $400-$1500. Let's say an average of $600. So each HP is costing you $30+.

Predator Tuner = 100rwhp for $300 ( http://shop.diablosportpower.com/DiabloSport-Predator-U7180-GM-Duramax-66L-LB7-U7180.htm ) and that's the NEW price.

The tuner is $3 per hp, or 10 times the bang for the buck.

id like an on the fly tuner, my grandpa doesnt have a ig truck and uses mine alot to haul heavy loads, and would like something he could understand and be able to use. thats why i was leaning toward the bully dog 40420.ive already staight piped my stock exhaust, and gotten a cold air intake.

Predator was just an example, and seemed to fit your budget better. The BD is twice as much money.

Keep in mind, anything over 75rwhp can eventually "limp" the factory transmission. The higher the power level, the faster it will happen.

I'm not trying to sell you anything, or convince you one brand of tuner is better than another. But I've run everything from 50hp to 250hp tuners. Yes, there are handheld tuners that will add 250rwhp+ (PPE Hot +2 comes to mind) to your truck ... for about 10 minutes that is. If you are on a budget, stay small and cheap. Anything more than 100hp is out of your budget, even if someone gives it to you for free. Trust me on that. :D

I have a hypertech max energy tuner. I says it puts out 113 HP and 183 TQ. I don't know if the HP is at the rear wheels, but it deffinatly wakes it up when you need it! I usually leave it at stage three and just take it easy. I also know that the power is there when I need it!

If your goal is to run 12's:

Crack pipe
Banks BigHead
Lift pump
Built trans + triple disc
Modded regulator
Tie rod sleeves and Cognito braces
PPE Hot +2 or EFILive custom tune.

You can either buy a modded regulator or do it yourself. IIRC, there is a tutorial on porting your regulator. I'll see if I can find it.

I run the PPE lift pump, but there are others that do just fine.

Be aware, a PPE Hot +2 set on kill (10 power levels), or a serious EFILive race tune will smoke your trans like reefer at a Grateful Dead concert.
