Last fall I had a Cooper ATR have a section of tire (about the size of a silver dollar) come out of the center tread last year (tire was only a month old). I heard a flapping/thudding sound and then nothing (tread must have been loose then went flying). Pulled over to check truck and could not see anything. Pulled into my buddies yard, parked truck, then walking back to it and noticed a weird shadow on my driver's side front tire. Upon closer inspection I noticed a section of tread all the way down to the steel belts came out (tire stayed inflated). Swapped it out for the spare, brought it to the tire shop and they gave me a new tire no questions asked. Kinda makes me wonder about the other tires. I have run Coopers for years and have had good luck. Hopefully this is just a "temporary" issue.
