For anyone who knows him {"Jason" form NH} a member here...... http://208.109.104.11/forum/member.php?u=73 lost his motor during a pass 12.1:(@120 last FRI (13th) night. His was I believe the first motor assembled with the ROSS forged pistons in it. Merchant did the motor 3 years ago and it has been hammered on ever since. I guess 4 pistons had the oil rings freeze up, they then got a bit HOT and hurt the cylinders pretty bad as well. The good news is that the pistons themselves dont appear to have failed, so I guess the forged units are going to be able to hang in there in big power builds. If he gets me some pics I'll post them here. He is collecting parts this week for another try.

Heck 3 dyno days seems to be extended life for the Cummins guys... :D

Yeah Pat. I thought the thread on CompD about Cummins' Rod Failures was interesting reading... :D

Yeah, those guys are a riot!

"Hey Bubba? I'm going to blow my truck up on the dyno this weekend. There will be a hundred dudes watching!"

"Yeah, that will show everyone the Cummins is da bestest engine! I'll bring the reefer, you bring the beer."

If you point at them and laugh, they ban you. :baby:

It's like watching millionaires doing a fireworks show to impress their neighbors and burning down their houses in the process. Priceless! :D

When I decide to retire Casper, that is how he will die. I will take him to a dyno, glue a Goathead sticker on it, and blow it up. Then I will be a true "deisel tuna"!

Hell, sheet happens. But why try to accelerate the process...

Hahaha tuners? They crank the boxes till it blows up, then turn it back a notch and change the engine. I havent heard a "tuned" commonrail that hasnt rattled like it was full of marbles.

Very true...i have heard a few in the dyno that i actually stepped away in fear of flying parts.

I just saw this.

That sucks.

It was the first motor I knew of that had Forged pistons and I heard he beat it pretty good, so that is promising.
I was pretty interested in the build as if mine ever goes, I would like to try the forged piston route. I was curious how it would do in a daily driven application year round in new england and then beat on the weekends.

Now that we know the pistons stayed together, do any of the engine gurus have any ideas on how to make the rings live a little longer???
I know Jason used quite a bit of nitrous, could that have shortened ring life?

Last I knew the Keystone ring was the area of concern on the forged piston, not the oil ring. I'm assuming maybe running a bigger/smaller gap might help.......

I am very suprised how well this held up ( pistons ). I have not seen them myself yet, but would be interested in seeing how it all looks. This motor was built back before built motors were common and things have come along ways since then.

Pics would be cool.

I know you said the pistons didn't fail, but did the stuck rings hurt them at all (i.e. can they be reused)?

Also, how bad are the cylinder wall (i.e. can they be honed or bored/honed)?

Thanks.

Eric, any preliminary thoughts on the rings?
I know it was somewhat of a quessing game going in as to how long this would last (and it lasted pretty long under what seems to be a tough life)? If I would have had to guess a few years ago what would have failed first, I can honestly say Oil Rings would have been low on the list (if there at all)
