Blew up my intake

I called my dad yesterday to see how everything was going, and he told me to stay calm as my truck had an issue the other day. He had just picked up a big compressor for my shop and he was on his way up to the shop to drop it off. He went to pass a guy on the highway and when the pass was complete he let off the throttle, he then heard a large BOOOOOOM!!! The truck was hissing really loud he pulled over at a gas station and poped the hood. The truck had back fired so hard it blew my stock intake apart.

He pulled the filter a K&N and saw it was very dirty. The truck had sucked the intake almost closed at the air box, and then blew a hole in the hard plastic up by the turbo The truck was runnin a small 40 horse tow tune when he did it. I hope the turbo is not hurt.

i've heard about the K&N filters doin that before. mainly b/c they are very thin and tend to implode. but i'm sure it being dirty didn't help it either.

I may not have seen it yet but I dont think they have invented the self cleaning air filter....:rofl:

The filter may be good for a million miles but it needs cleaned a time or two in that time.:hug:

sorry about your troubles.
i've heard of that happening on stock tuning. diesels suck in a lot of air. that filter is pretty important.

KN reduces total filtration surace area to 10-20% of stock. Imagine how many people run around this way thinking they have paid to improve the vehicle somehow.

The filter usually gets cleaned every other oil change. And he has ben keeping it up to schedule on service, the truck has seen about 3K miles in the last year tops. But he has been doing alot of dirt road driving hauling stuff to the shop. All of our vehicles are kept to a very tight and strict service dead line, I am assumeing the dirt roads have taken there toll on the filter. Only reason we ever ran KN is due to the fact I don't really like buying Donaldsons every couple months, not cheap.

I'm waiting for pics I need to get ahold of Tanner he may be able to go snap some pics. From what my dad told me it colapsed the intake by the air box and then blew a chunk out up by the turbo... Pops looked at the compressor wheel and he said there is no signs of damage. I'll have to see if Tanner can't give it a look see.

How much is a turbocharger?

OK, that probably just sounds argumentative, but a question: Why would you have to replace the stock every couple months? Because it looks dirty, or because the filter minder is pegged in the red? Stock will literally hold 10 times more dirt with the same pressure drop? ...and keep filtering clean. It sounds like you are making a case for stock to me, especially on dirt roads. The reduced maintenance ALONE, makes staying stock a value IMO. The fact that you have to pay for this kind of harrassment is just salt in the wound. Check out an investigative article I did on oem vs "other guy" drop in elements on the old equipment. I think it is sobering.

Very interesting... When I am home the truck is run hard it sees more mile in a week than it will see in a year with me gone. I believe what I will be doing now is makeing an intake out of a bullydog kit useing there air box and makeing my own tubeing. And I will stick with disposable filters, I see that S&B has released there own line of disposable filters, I will check them out. I am a huge fan of danaldson after seeing the abuse they take over here in the sand box. And they seem to do very well.

I should have pics up monday and some news on it's condition. My fingers are crossed pops said the truck was runni0n fine after it happened he drove it back to his house to sit until the intake is replaced.

Went and looked at the truck today. Everything is fine blake, dirty filter is the culprit. Pulling the same stuff your sister did a few years agooke:. The intake wont go on until tomorrow. Your dad had the intake up at the shop and truck at the house i would of put it on there but my phone was acting screwy this weekend. So i didnt get your text from yesterday until today. Thanks Tanner, I was gettin a bit worriedno doubt. What did the stock intake look like? He said it had a pretty good hole out of it.

Hey and my sisters truck was fuel filter that had NOT been changed in 80K miles. Mine was a dirty air filter. If I was there and runnin my maintance schedule that would not have happened. But I am glad all is okay and the truck is still kickin.
