I have a 68 billet cheetah with about 30k miles on it and its getting some side to side play in the shaft and its getting close to time to put the truck away for winter, therefore, would anyone happen to know who would re build these kind of turbos? I talked to fleece and their reply was to sell this turbo as is and buy a brand new 68 from them. That isn't really in my future as far as 2500 dollar turbo goes, i was looking for just new bearings and seals in this one. If anyone can help it would be appreciated.
When did you purchase this turbo? The Billet 68 has only been available sense spring. Did you purchase it from FPE or an FPE Distributor?
Side to Side play is normal for any journal bearing turbo. Especially if the truck is not running, since it would have no oil pressure to suspend the shaft. You may even be able to force the compressor to touch the cover.
If that is really a FPE Billet 68 VNT, its capable of 800+RWHP. We have had multiple trucks, including customer built trucks do better than 800HP. Seems to me looking at your mod list you need a good set of injectors, at least 60% over stock, in order to really take advantage of that turbo.
By the way, if you talked to someone at Fleece Performance that told you to sell the turbo, rather than offering to go thru it, PM me, email me, or call me please. Its a lot cheaper and easier to just put a set of bearings in a turbo, rather than cleaning up pieces after it failed. Otherwise, if there is more to it than that, I'd like to know as well.
