Best way to get started tuning?

I already have EFI and understand the general idea behind the different tables and am starting to understand which ones effect other tables etc. The problem is I want to play with it some and adjust certain things but I dont know what the limits are to where Im going to hurt my truck. Alot of the dumb elementary questions I have could be answered with just a couple hours of being with someone in person. Ive read pretty much all the tutorials on all the different diesel sites and EFIs site and that helped a ton but Im still not quite there. I dont have an exorbitant amount of free time to tinker, which is the main problem. Im almost to the point where I would be willing to fly somewhere to "schooled" by someone who knows whats up with this stuff and will spend the time to teach me. I would be more apt to play around with the tuning more if I had a built trans but Im not going to have that done for a while since Im not going to have any free time to do the install since I dont trust other people working on my truck nor do I want to pay someone for the install when I can do it myself.

Welcome, and that's what a website is for.

There are no stupid questions, except the one you don't ask.

Some of the smartest Dmax guys are over here, so feel free to pick their brains.

A diesel boils down to fuel, air, and timing, just like a gasser, but we are less likely to hurt something with a tuning mistake.

basically try useing the mcrat 20/20 tune. it is a small tune and will show you what adjustments get made and how to adjust them. then your reading time is going to be your best help. this place and others are very informative to what works and doesn't as long as you want to read. some limits for stock components are say 32 psi boost pressure, most will agree with the 28-30 * of timing max. some hav more and some have less but 2700ms of fueling is enough for the timing we can run. but going that high will definatley ruin a stock trans. making fueling and timing adjustments at or above 25-30mm3. lower than that will cause smoke until the turbo wrams up, or some weird shifts do to the torque management.

those are just the numbers i have gathered in my reading. i am not a pro by no means. if you have a question just ask. EVERYONE here will help you if they know. usually someone will. good luck

I had heard from people on some of the "other" sites this was the place to come to actually get help. It seems on the other site you have to have a huge post count to even get any attention for anything. I attached a copy of my tune, would any of you guys mind looking at it? It is the tune that gave me the numbers in my sig running my wheel and tire combo. I like it because it is pretty smokey but gives some good power. Since I went to the heavier wheel/tire package the downshifts from a highway roll can be lazy and it sometimes feels like its slipping but other then that it runs great and spins the 35s through first pretty good. From what Ive gathered(through reading) this tune is a bit low on timing but a bit high on pulse width. The speedo value is wrong for 35s it needs to be set to 594, which is probably why Ive been getting a check brake system CEL when setting the cruise on the highway. Judging by the numbers in my sig how stout of a tune is this? I dont have the transgo installed yet, and was thinking of getting a copilot instead since they seem to work better from my reading. Im also going to get a mag hytec trans pan to try and keep it happy for as long as possible.

this should be little more lively and and the tranny will still live nothing fancy either. should run like stock under 40-50% throttle and hall ass on WOT

EGT most likely will be be low as well.

those most likley alot lest smoke;)

B115 says TPS to rpm = TQ
B1102 say TQ to RPM= mm3
B0720 say mm3 to MPA(rail pressure)= pulse width

timing is rather mild. set you up with 20* @ 3000

also redid you timing table as well.. i like smooth tables.. you set up to run 3-8* depending on how hard you push the go pedal. while cruising

not sure if you going to like it.. but it gives you an idea on some thign you can do:)

Thanks man, for some reason I cant DL your attachment and my EFI program I cant get it to open up any tunes. Ill try it on my other laptop when I get home. Thanks for the help, Im looking forward to comparing the two tunes and seeing what you did. When I click the open file in EFI the bar up at the top just kinda blinks real quick. Maybe if I plug the cable in when I get home itll work right, never had this problem before, I was looking at my tune earlier.

I couldnt wait I had to try it out, I honestly couldnt tell a whole lot of difference. There was a little less smoke and maybe a bit more power felt up top. I need to learn how to log so I can tell what difference small changes make.

Thanks Neens, Ill try that some time in the near future. Im having some computer problems since my dog knocked my computer off the table and messed up some sectors on the HD.

The history thing you are talking about is where you can compare the two tunes and it gives you a summary of what tables were changed and by what percentage right? Thats what I did with the tune that malibu posted. So will the tune you posted up feel slower? Im thinking about putting my stock tires and wheels back on while Im learning this tuning stuff, burning up these 450$ a piece tires isnt cool lol. I thought the pulse widths I was running were a bit high since they are in the 3000s up high but I havent look at how much fuel its injecting during that time since EFI wont load up right now due to my POS laptop. I would be more apt to tinker with stuff if I knew where the limits were in timing, I know boost shoudl be maxed at 32ish, and I dont want to kill the trans just yet.

How come in the diesel tunes, the timing isnt higher in the lower rpm regions? I know on some the gas motors Ive tinkered with adding some timing in the lower regions really helped on 60' times. Ive also read where some of the Westers diesel tunes are high in timing down low and rev alot faster, if this is true why doesnt everyone do that? Right now I have the mods in my sig either on the truck or will be in the next week, is there any other supporting mods I should get right now, besides obviously the trans, I know I dont need a lift pump yet since I dont have a trans. Im debating back and forth whether to install the transgo or get the copilot setup, I really like the concept behind it.

Neens, thats too bad she will be an ex soon, but then you can post more pics and not feel bad lol.:joker:

my copilot unless you set it to kill and run it that way all the time you don;t feel much. but it is helping. i have mine set to kill yet when i drive normal i don't feel much. then when i romp hard on it, it really shifts quick. that is about all you will notice. the rest is in pressures.
