Balance rate Causes

Other than injector failure, what are other reasons for high balance rates. Bent rods, worn rings, bad valve seals, etc..?
I had a balance rate of over 8 and what sounded like injector rattle. I had my injectors sent back to Exergy and they said everything checked out OK. My next step is put a set of stock injectors in that I have in and see what happens with the rates then. I also thought of doing a leak down and/or compression check.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks all for the help!

a compression/leak down test will tell you ALOT on the condition of that cylinder. id start there

+8
Just 1 injector
takes 10-15 minutes to creep up to +8.
Exergy is sending them back and recommended to set the same NIMA value.
Anyone familiar with this?

I'm assuming whoever you talked to wants you to program all the injector flow rates to the same value. You will need a Tech II or a good scan tool that can program those values. EFILive cannot do that. If that doesn't work, I would suggest moving the injector to another cylinder and see if the balance rate follows the injector or stays with the same cylinder. You could also do a compression check.

i had a balance rate of +4.5, but no rough idle, the smoke went away...and a week later i made a couple passes at the track and cracked that piston. Sent injector to exergy and it tested out good:confused: Maybe there was already damage to that cylinder.

Do a compression test and then go from there. No sense guessing what could be wrong until you perform your due diligence on the diagnostics.

I have shitty balance rates too and exergy also recommended nima codes be redone. All mine have 375? Compression, regardless they were all the same. I'll still need to get them programmed to check, if that doesn't help there going back to exergy.

Can anyone tell me if an improper valve adjustment will give a bad balance rate?

Along those same lines, maybe the injector rattle I hear are caused by improperly adjusted valves and not the injectors? Just a thought as I am trying to Isolate the problem. As soon as I get the injectors in I will do a compression test.

It could if they were far out enough. Anything whatsoever that would cause a change of power relative to the rest of the cylinders will throw the balance rates off. If all of the valve adjustments were starting to loosen up equally it probably wouldn't.
