I just returned from a snow mobile trip up the Iditarod Trail, from Willow, AK, up past the Roan Roadhouse (a BLM cabin), and back. The best part is that work paid for the entire trip :thumb:. Five of us left Monday morning and just returned this afternoon. I finally got my shower! We ended up putting almost 400 miles on the sleds, had great trail conditions, and managed not to bust up the rental sleds too much.
We went from the Deshka Landing, down the Deshka River, down the Susitna River, up the Yetna River to the Skwentna River, then to Shell Lake Lodge overland. From Shell Lake we went up the Iditarod Trail to Rainy Pass Lodge, then from Rainy Pass Lodge to the Roan Roadhouse and back in one day, then back to Shell Lake Lodge, and finally back to the Deshka Landing. Five days on the Trail, four nights in Lodges, it was just fantastic.
You can see a cell tower in one of the photos (not AT&T usable, so my crackberry was a watch when I felt like digging it out of my bag, or an alarm clock for 5 days....too bad).
I was co-leader on the trip (we two were the only ones who had a lot of riding experience-the other three had never been on a sled until Monday), so I did not get a lot of picts, these are the best I have. If folks are interested, I can get some picts from the other guys....please let me know.
My_Chariot shows two of our sleds and the cell tower mentioned earlier.
Shell_Lake_1 is taken above Shell Lake, with the Skwentna River in the background.
Shell_Lake_2 shows more of Shell Lake, with more of the Skwentna
Skwentna_River has the Skwentna under the sun, and the valley to the right of the sun is where we were headed.
All of the picts were taken from the location of the cell tower.
This is the best job I have ever had, getting paid to play!
