Can someone please explain to me the operation a an ATS viskus clutch torque converter operation? Does the viskus clutch have a self contained fluid? Like I am talking separate from the transmission fluid?

I am in the unlucky position of fixing an ATS transmission for someone else. 2006 LBZ. The truck has EFI live tuning by Rob Coddens and an ATS Drop in transmission with purple paint.

The truck came into my shop yesterday. The vehicle will not shift past first gear. The trany will try to shift to second gear one time. Then the tuck sets a code and engine light comes. After that the truck is STUCK in first gear!!! The code that sets is a P2724 pressure solenoid 1 stuck on.

When the truck came into the shop there were 2 more codes as well. P0776 PC solenoid 2 stuck on. Also a P0732 Incorrect 2nd gear.

Ok so I pulled the pan. First thing I noticed was a residue on the bottom of the pan. I am not sure were this is coming from. It is an orange or copperish colored substance. I cut open the pan filter. The filter was orange!!! Same stuff as in the pan.

Next I pulled the A and B trim solenoids out of the transmission. I noticed that one of the solenoids was plugged with an this same trash.

I strictly do Suncoast builds. I am not to familiar with ATS. The trany fluid level was good. The fluid is quite dark and does not look to healthy. I am wondering were this fluid contamination is coming from? Any ideas? Does a failed ATS clutch leave orange trash behind? I suspect torque converter failure but cannot be certain.

If your being paid to fix this for someone else you shouldn't have to ask these sort of basic questions......

If there is that much crap in the pan and filter it's time to start completely over with a full overhaul. Which includes a new, or refreshed torque converter!

Also, don't forget to inspect the oil cooler located in the tank of the radiator. If the converter did indeed fail it will be full of garbage.

It's not hard to take all the purple crap out and replace it with good stuff if you know what you're doing. No need for another core trans.

There is no such word as viskus. It's a made up name for sales purposes.

Thanks for the help. I am unsure of exactly what all parts ATS puts in there builds. There is an added solenoid in the valve body. The solenoid is on a transfere tube. What is the purpse of this solenoid?

I am looking at doing a build with Suncoast parts. I obviously need a converter. I am looking also to get a GMAX 6 PAC.

My question is what else to I need? In regards to getting this blue crap out of the transmission? I forgot to mention that the transmission has a co-pilot controler.

I hate to be harsh, but you sound more like a kit installer than a trans builder. If you're asking these types of questions, maybe you should let someone with a little more knowledge tackle this one.

You can put a stock tube back on the valve body, or simply leave that solenoid unplugged.

Make sure you replace the main regulator valve and spring as ATS uses there own setup. Check the converter lockup valve.

Clutch wise you should have no issue whatsoever figuring out what they did and what needs to be replaced if your capable of doing this.

I would check to make sure nothing has been modified on the stator/pump separator plate, and the valvebody seperator plate. Who knows what might have been done.

I've never seen them do anything else special. But you will be responsible for making sure since you are being paid to this.

Good luck.

Exactly why I said I'd start with a core trans..

I'll admit it, I'm a kit installer until I find the time to actually learn one.

I will admit being a kit installer. I have 11 years experiance working at a gm dealership. I Just quit my job December of 2015. I opened my own shop in January. I am familar with the allison but I am New to high horse power builds. Any help I get is much appreciated.

I have currently installed 2 suncoast kits. One on a six speed and one on a five speed. Both kits have suncoast converters as well. I modify my lock up boost valve for 0 knock down. I have also been installing Mike L pressure regulator spring and shim.

Valve body mods included a Trans go shift kit. Also I replaced all three shift valve springs. I got all my parts through ATP trucks.

These builds were supposed to be good for 500 HP. NO problems so far.

Do I need to do any thing else to hold back 600 HP?
