Arp rocker studs discontinued, are they necessary?

I tried to order arp rocker arm studs for my build and found out that they are no longer making them. Will I need an upgraded rocker stud? And if so where do I get them?

I wouldn't say they are a necessity. Cheap peace of mind. Most hardware stores stock hardened 10.9 metric bolts that are of the same if not more tensile strength as the ARP bolts/studs. I've used ARP bolts, studs, and the generic bolts/studs and all work just as well as each other in this application.

BS.

8.8 or 10.9 even 12.9 Bolts DO NOT have the tensil, yield, or shear strength a 190,000 PSI ARP stud does. in fact a 12.9 bolt has only 177,000 PSI rating. It does make a difference.

For you to say its all the same is obvious you dont know what your saying. Please remember some on here are trying to learn.

I was going off what McMaster-Carr's site advertises them as, so if they are wrong, so be it.

Either way, I'll stick by my statement that in that application, they will work the same. They are only torqued to 40ftlb...they are not being asked to hold a lot

That explains alot...

TQ value means didly squat! its about the tension the bolt or studs holds at its TQ value. (Clamping force PSI ) The valve train is one of the most highly stressed areas in any engine....so go ahead and listen to dts, or that little guy son your shoulder...there both wrong and it will cost you big one day!

Shane, the ARP bolts are normally supposed to be torqued to 30ftlbs via Merchant's instructions. The studs are more like you say.

Dave, please explain your reasoning for thinking that it will "cost me big some day"....I'll give you a hint, don't try to convince me that stronger studs/bolts keeps the rocker arms from deflecting off the bridges...

The bolts/studs were intended to keep the Assembly more true under higher stress, however, with the retention of the stock springs/spacers between the arms, deflection is very much allowed.

And for learning purposes, for myself included, what is the tensile strength of the stock bolts that have been used in countless 1000hp duramaxes using stiffer valve springs and high rpm stress?

Dale, I mean this as nicely as possible, but these are all questions your builder should be answering for you. If you want to check their answers...99% of the time the search function will bring you all the info you need.
