Anyone tried no intercooler on Duramax?

The 6.7 Powerstroke runs an air/water charge air cooler straight from the factory. It is comparatively small. They do run a separate low temp cooling system for it.

I didn't know how much water u would have to run in it, meaning weight. But if the cooler is smaller might make up for it. Is the 6.4 unit run off of coolant I would imagine? I would cycle some ice water through that baby. But that might not be practical for street use. Plus buying an air to water intercooler would not be cost effective for me but if I made one it would be different.

6.4 is air to air. I think capacity on the low temp coolant system is about 2 gallons but it's been a while. I'd have to look that up to be sure. But it also cools part of the egr cooler as well.

Hm I might have to look up how to throw together an air to water. Guess I'll just stick with the stocker for now

Why are you considering ditching it to begin with? Weight? I'm assuming this hypothetical is based off you wanting to ditch it out of a full size truck platform.

Mainly if it didn't do much anyway I'd ditch it for clutter. As simplify turbo setups and cost of buying ic pipes. Minimize boost leak possibilitys.

Ok so how well does water cool off intake Temps with no cooler? Does it get as cool as having a intercooler? Would u want to inject the water as close to the turbo as u can I guess? And would it harm the turbo to spray it on the intake side of the turbo?

you would want to inject water after the turbo to cool the intake charge and depending on your turbo and how hard you are pushing it, you can make the intake temp lower than ambient temp. you wont ever do that with an intercooler by its self.

I can't help but feel like you're trying to solve an issue that really isn't there. Keep an intercooler in it. Keep an eye on IAT's if you're concerned, add water and/or turbos as necessary. Deleting an intercooler in the name of simplicity or to save on plumbing cost is the wrong direction IMO.

Not saying it has hot iat's now. More so wondering if you could have the same effect in cooling iats without a ic.im not ready to rip it out or anything. Time to dig this one back up from the dead....

In the 2WD Race truck we are working on we already had the radiator mounted in the bed with electric fans and an electric water pump. No HVAC system. Trans cooler in the bed also. Right now we are doing the next round of mods including head porting with bigger valves, a new cam, 300% overs, 14mm Stroker CP3, and an S485/96/.90T4 front mounted with the intercooler deleted and plumbed straight into a Wagler intake manifold. Plan to eventually run nitrous for cooling and power, but with him being on a stock short block right now we are going to hold off on that. For strictly track use with a turbo that size do you think the IAT/EGTs will get that out of hand to where we should install a water injection system? Have talked to a few people who took air to water systems off and run no intercooler and say that the weight savings was worth it, but they use nitrous for cooling.

I had my piping powder coated on my triple setup when I first built it . 10-15 hard runs later it blistered and boiled the powder coating on the high pressure pipe going down to inlet side of intercooler . I asked Mark about it , he said that it was normal to see temps in the 650 degree range on setups like mine . The low pressure pipe right where it connects to air intake side of valley turbo also looks toasty . He said NOS would help and I'm sure it will

There is a big difference in your triples and a big single. You are compressing the air twice, through 3 relatively small turbos and to a much higher pressure than what this truck will be seeing. We also won't be pushing this turbo very hard while it is on the stock motor and not using nitrous. Guess we will just have to see what the IAT/EGT readings on it are when we get it back together and make some passes.

I run my dragster with no IC and didn't have any problems. I run a hand full of passes with no nitrous also. In a max effort deal you will be down a little power but in my deal I didn't care. I just wanted simple and basic. In 4 years racing the Dragster I never hurt a motor and only 1 turbo. I was pretty happy.

Brett - I am not against running nitrous on it, but on a stock short block I think the turbo and fuel that we have will be way more than enough. I could still pull more fuel out of it and spray it more for a cooling affect than anything. But if power is the only thing that the hot air will affect I don't care much about that.

Jeff - that is the info that I was looking for. Figured you had made some fuel only passes. I don't care if I am down on power for right now either, in fact I will be way down on purpose. I want to keep this as simple and basic as I can, somewhat for weight and some so it is easier to work on with less to go wrong.

Yep I'm different than most. I just wanted to win. lol Basic is simple and simple is basic! Like you said way less problems. Some guys just try to hard to reinvent the wheel. With your power turned back I bet you will be fine.

Single turbo and no intercooler on my new setup. I wanted everything as simple as possible. I plan on using nitrous for a spool aid only for most runs.
