Update

Well looked at truck , no visible signs of coolant puking out of reserve. No sweet smell out of exhaust. Owner did say that last night coming home truck lost power , noticed reserve was dry,filled it for about a minute with water. no smoke today on initial start up. Any thoughts?? Egr cooler ?

There will be no sweet smell out the exhaust as it Burns it off hence the white smoke

EGR cooler is a goner, it's burnin the coolant up IMO.

Kat, the 6.0 has the same indication of black soot in the coolant reservoir if a head gasket is leaking. Also, have them look around the reservoir cap and below to see if any stains are present from coolant being forced out. If not, Does the white smoke kinda smell " taste sweet "? I'd bet the EGR cooler is to blame.

If they decide to go the fuel problem direction, and they pull the injectors, have them slide a fairly tight fitting rubber hose on the end of the injector and apply vaccum by way of a hand pump with guage. If the injector is leaking, the guage will show it.

I've got a strange " to me " smoking 6.0 here at the moment, starts and runs fine for a few seconds then smokes and all but locks up. Come to find out the head was cracked at the cups and oring and filling the cylinder full of fuel.. ouch.

Good luck, those distant troubleshoots are hard.

I would still bet it's the EGR cooler.

What year is this truck Kat? If it's an 06 or 7 deleting the egr cooler will cause a code and light even with egr valve plugged in. The cooler can be changed without having to remove the intake. A better option is available by way of aftermarket EGR cooler. Some of these are better left with EGR with an update.

Hmmm.. The sweet " taste " is there, at least for me. Easy to find out, pull the cooler and pressure up on it.

Could just be that the coolant has been thinned by that much water. How would antifreeze " burn "?

Okay evaporated... Easy to do, getting to the egr cooler is not an easy task

Uh antifreeze will burn. And that's another reason the cooler fails because of temps the coolants rise to in these particular trucks

True, easy was the wrong word. I should have said it can be done without removing the intake or turbocharger and wiggling it out is no easy task but, doable.

I understand these OEM coolers fail because of the material and design. Other options are available and other design types have held up pretty well so far, the only ones I've had to redo are ones replaced with OEM parts. Still takes a bunch of heat cycles for them to fail.
