Question: Anyone know if you diagnose a 6.0 HG same as the Duramax?

I'm trying to help diagnose my gf husbands truck remotely. He has a 6.0 that he that has 177k on. They have spent 9k in repairs in the last year. Yes, I told them to sell it.

But, it is blowing a lot white smoke on start up. After driving it a couple of miles it clears up and runs fine. From what they tell me the smoke doesn't smell like diesel.

He just had knee replacement surgery and can't drive. So I'm wondering if it can be diagnosed the same as a Duramax? Have her drive it and warm it up and see the hose stays hard same as the Duramax when it sits over night?

Get a tester or bring it to a shop to check for exhaust gasses in the coolant tank. The hose trick should apply to a 6.0 powerstroke aswell I would think but I am not positive. Also look for bubbles in the coolant tank and excessive pressure..

Kat, the 6.0 has the same indication of black soot in the coolant reservoir if a head gasket is leaking. Also, have them look around the reservoir cap and below to see if any stains are present from coolant being forced out. If not, Does the white smoke kinda smell " taste sweet "? I'd bet the EGR cooler is to blame.

If they decide to go the fuel problem direction, and they pull the injectors, have them slide a fairly tight fitting rubber hose on the end of the injector and apply vaccum by way of a hand pump with guage. If the injector is leaking, the guage will show it.

I've got a strange " to me " smoking 6.0 here at the moment, starts and runs fine for a few seconds then smokes and all but locks up. Come to find out the head was cracked at the cups and oring and filling the cylinder full of fuel.. ouch.

Good luck, those distant troubleshoots are hard.

head studs will do little to no good if the egr cooler is intact. We had a late 03 or early 04 I don't even want to think about it. The smoke can also be a bad injector we had several bad ones on ours, head gasket we did once and studed it and then it blew one again even studed foudnt he egr cooler was clogged. Anyway best of luck to them, I wish him a speedy recovery knee replacement aren't to fun...

Does this set a code? There are no codes set. She did say when she drove it today she thought the power dropped off then it came back a little while later.

nope no codes will set , its a common problem with those trucks . it was a very poor design and needed to be addressed from the factory . we all know how that turned out :rolleyes:symptons you described are classic case. if it was head gaskets it would be pukin coolant out the reservior and wettin the entire driver's side splash shield. done about 6 or 7 of these now. also kat let them know who ever does the work of replacing the cooler or deleting it should also include an oil cooler replacement aswell, they go out alot too. you will be right there at it when you replace the egr cooler, so might aswell pay labor once and do both rather than have to go back in later and pay labor again to pull the turbo and intake. hope this helps:hug:

Update

Well looked at truck , no visible signs of coolant puking out of reserve. No sweet smell out of exhaust. Owner did say that last night coming home truck lost power , noticed reserve was dry, filled it for about a minute with water. no smoke today on initial start up. Any thoughts?? Egr cooler ?

EGR cooler or injectors not poppin open. If it has been chilly out at all and they run a thicker weight oil the injectors will kick your but, either they will hang open or not open at all.

How is the oil pressure? Oil cooler is shotty aswell...

Oil pressure looked good, he had just had new turbo and oil pump installed. Obviously he is losing coolant somewhere since his reserve was dry.

Thanks again Ruben for going out there to trouble shot it:hug: I just spoke with David Lott and he says it is most likely the EGR cooler.

They are a little bit of a pain but just delete it if at all possible, like I said in previous post , with all things said its gonna be the egr cooler
