I have a friend that lost the key.

They want to charge her $1300 for a new ecm and key. They are saying since it had a chip in it that is how much it will cost.

TIA

Kat i do a lot of work for the local Toyota dealership and the service manger said to call Toyota Customer Relations and they will help you out. $1300 for a key that the car isn't worth much more WTF.

Thanks I will have her give them a try. I had already told her to call another dealer since I thought the first one was trying to take advantage. I guess she was given the same answer by the 2nd one.

a 99 avalon is only a chip key if it's an xls i believe. If you pm me the vin i can get you the exact parts prices. I'm a service writer at toyota. If it is a chip key and your friend lost the master key they can't program a new key without it unfortunatley.

Certain years/models Toyota will cover the computer but you still have to pay for two key's and four hours of labor to program them which ends up being around $600 or so. I just looked up the bulletin and neither four cylinder or six cylinder 99 avalon is covered by it.

Toyota makes(well...made) some of the best quality stuff on the planet. I've owned several, and literally couldn't believe how good they are. Usually quite easy to work on too... but this here situation is downright retarded  Hope your friend gets something figured out that doesn't cost 100 times what it should :thumb:

The problem has been solved!!!!! Yay! Thanks all for all of your help. The ECU flash machine needed a software update and some tech support from the inventors in Turkey! Apparently the weather in Turkey has been bad, trouble communicating.

We're back in business to the tune of only $350 as opposed to dealer's quote of 1300 and change! Thanks all!

There are people who do it when you lose your master key. There is a special machine that flashes the ECU and programs the new chipped key. We paid $350 to an automotive specialist locksmith.
