oh those backstraps and tenderloins are going to fall apart they'll be soooo tender! I'm bout to start gnawing on my fingers now just thinking about it!

Congrats on your first deer. My first deer was a button buck as well and I shot it thinking it was a doe. A good bit heavier than that round these parts though. :D

not bad for no sights either :coolspot:

now i just gotta learn how to butcher it.

Looks like the arrow is leaning on the pin guard...

There should be some butchering guides online (QDMA, State Game agencies)...main parts are the backstraps (along the backbone), fish or tenderloins (inside the body cavity, either side of the spine ahead of hips), steaks and/or roasts from the hind quarters, de-bone the rest.

The first archery harvest is always memorable...I remember mine like it was yesterday.

Bow kill? what broadhead was he using.

a good broadhead can be the difference between finding or losing the deer. If the hole closes up because the broadhead didnt cut a big enough hole it makes for a fun time trying to follow a blood trail.

Either way thats pretty awesome you found it that far from the place you shot it

he's using some expanding tips w/ std broadheads. there was good blood for about 20-30yds then nothing.

Oh ok. I shoot traditional bows so I only use fixed blade broadheads. In my opinion a fixed blade broadhead will do a better job than any expandable. When you get a two blade broadhead with an accesory blade itll cut a pretty nasty hole. I guess I cant blame the lack of a bloodtrail entirely on the broadhead though. Ive had some deer do that when I get a high lung shot.

yea i think he had a light gut shot. b/c there was good blood then nothing so it musta sealed itself up fairly quick. he hunts almost 30' in the air (f that) so it cut the deer up pretty good inside.

Glad you guys found the deer...that can make for a restless night for the hunter.

I agree with JP on the high lung shot, usually the lungs fill with blood thus loss of bloodtrail right away...when that happens look higher, most times as the lungs fill they snort it out their nose.

On the broadhead subject...I usually only use fixed-blade heads (3 or 4 blade Muzzys), I shyed away from mechanicals due to the chance (however slim it may be) of them not opening. Last year I found the G5 Tekan II mechanicals, based on the design, in the situation they would fail to open the leading blade is large enough to allow a clean transition to the cutting blade and still maintain a cutting diameter within 3/4" or so of a fixed 4-blade.

I didn't get to try them yet on a deer, I need to find my test specimen...but after some in-season scouting I found some signs he's around :D

his expandables also have a broadhead on them. i thought that was pretty sweet b/c either way you were making penetration

Ya that's another reason I don't like mechanical broadheads. There's always a slight chance they fail. I prefer steelforce broadheads because of the large hole they cut and the penetration I've seen with them. There's another broadhead that I use called silverflames. They are quite expensive but are by far my favorite. They have the best blade of any broadhead I've seen, they never dull and they are very sharp.

By the way if anybody needs arrow building supplies or custom made arrows I can do it. My dad owns this business and I have access to all the items for sale, including the Sitka gear hunting clothing which is some badass shit. Here's a link to the website.

If any of yall wanna give traditional archery a shot let me know. The Bob Lee bows are by far the smoothest best shooting traditional bows you can get, and Im not just sayin that because my dad owns the business.

Just a related tip...an antler deformity of one antler is usually caused by the deer suffering bodily injury. The injury will have occured on the opposite side of the body as the deformed antler...in your deer's case, the right side.

Good luck in harvesting him.
