Been a long season for me started in Wyoming September 1st chasing mule deer at 10,000 feet DIY with a bow, had lots of close calls, blew my first stalk at 25 yards when I picked the wrong row of trees to head down. Then to New Mexico for mulies, not really knowing what to expect, sat over some waterholes, then the rain came and never stopped, terrain not really suitable for spot and stalk hunting so I went back to Wyoming again, blew another stalk got caught in another snow storm after a long night and having my socks fall in the fire I carried myself off the mountain in what felt like a million pieces, with a 22 hour trip ahead of me to try and put myself back together for Wisconsin bow season.
That so far has been pathetic, after the DNR ruined are deer herd, I sit all day and be lucky to see a doe, and the occasional fawn. Hunted real hard and nothing to get my mood up, just wait for the rut, which seemed pretty much non-existent, a few 1.5 year olds but thats it. Set up a trail cam in a spot I never would of thought to hunt, as its within 200 yard of the house, and little tree cover, just a thin line of trees that snake along the river sandwhiched between a corn field. With a road 300 yards away. But imagine my surprise this past thursday when I pull the camera, I see this buck, he came through 1.5 hours after I set up the camera.
I tried like hell all 4 days to get up on this buck, rain and high winds didnt help, I really wanted him with my bow, but rifle season starts this weekend and I'm all out of vacation. I've got till January 2nd I'll be out there every weekend with whatever weapons in season. Just getting this buck on camera is enough to turn my whole season around. He's got some trash on his left side from what I can tell at least a 5x7, 12"+ G2
s and should gross 180+ easy.
