i have the oppurtunity to pick up an 04 Grand Cherokee for a price too good to pass up, but the motor is blown. it's got an inline 4.0 six in it now.

i was wondering if anyone knew what other years i can pull a 4.0 out of to put in it. i've found a few from 94-98s and a few 02s but obviously the older they are the cheaper they will be, which i'm a huge fan of.

so if anyone would happen to know thanks in advance.

you can fit 99-04 grand cherokee and 00-06 wrangler. keep an eye on the oil pressure fitting and a couple other sensors because they did change those through the years. just swap with the ones you take out of your motor.

what ever you do dont put a 4.7l in it. they are quite expensive and a complete pile a crap. one of chryslers worst engines in years. block and head change between 98 and 99.

yea i'd rather have the 4.0 they are workhorses and this isn't going to be a speed demon, just a nice daily.

so you say the block changed on the 4.0 from 98-99?

I recommend putting in a stroker. What is bust in the engine that is in it? You could buy a stroker kit or even a shortblock if I remember correctly. the 4.0 is good but you can always make it a bit better with a stroker kit.

she ran it out of oil:rofl:

that sounds like a decent plan but i'm not lookin to start another project ya know.

it's my ex girls truck and she just wants to get some money out of it. it's an 04 w/ 120k on it and i'm gonna pick it up for $400 bucks. it's in perfect shape too, just needs a grille and a motor lol. i figure if in the end i have $1200 bucks in it i'll be way ahead of the game.

I had a couple of '99s. . . starting with the '99 Grand, the water pump is reverse rotation; changed the head; intake changed; different exhaust manifold; bigger injectors; etc.

Not sure if you need any of this information but this website has quite a bit of good info on it.

sounds like a perfect candidate for a stroker crank new bearings rods and a slight cylinder bore... That is what I would do. If you are going to go through the time and effort of pulling the engine to replace it. Here are some options. http://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/stroker.html I am trying to save some money to do something like this on my jeep. Or spend it on a trans for my truck...

hmmmm i just did not expect there are lots of helpful informations in here that could help me also on my wrangler. lol Fat_robi how's your jeep now? mine is already 110k mileage and my wife is always using it. good thing i have a pick up truck so towing is not a problem for us. but still a headache. lol even though it gave us headache sometimes we just cant sell it to anybody. because as long as we can repair it, we will just keep it. besides new jeep models are too expensive nowadays. we will just keep our wrangler.

What ever you do don't get a 4.0 out of a 05-06 wrangler they are the biggest piece of junk ever made. And as for 4.0 being a work horse I think you will find out different I did. Good luck with your Jeep thing I am getting out of mine.

98' - 04' pretty much all of them will fit, need to be mindful of oil pressure sending unit and CPS locations because they changed somewhere in there... unless the motor is out of another 04' Grand, mach damn sure you transfer your accessory drive assemblies.

I blew up the motor in my 98' Wrangler... got a good deal on a whole 01' Grand motor, direct swap... not a chance... alternator in the wrong spot, power steering pump in the wrong spot, AC compressor in the wrong spot, etc, etc, etc...
