Alto clutches eating up drum?

I was speaking briefly by phone with a local Allison shop about getting my trans replaced. Maybe someone can answer this. When he asked what clutches I would go with i started with the alto clutches. He advised me that he doesn't recommend steel clutches due to them tearing up the drum? Something with the way they float in the trans is what he said. He recommended the precision converter also. I'm looking at keeping the motor stock but possibly going max effort tunes. Since Calvin's went to commerce I don't have an option close by for a build so I may go here. Talking with Willie Parsons he can ship me a trans and have these guys install it, but their charge is $105 an hour with 10-12 hours. Seemed steep. Appreciate any and all info.

Yep, seems steep for a trans swap. Shouldn't take more than 4-5 hrs to swap and get it running.

And for the drum issue he's probably referring to the thin kolene steels chewing up the groves, not the friction plates themselves. You can run the Alto frictions and the stock steels, but might have to fiddle around to get the clearance right.

As said, if someone is shipping you a trans, might as well be Mike L.

No offense to Mike, but 12 hours of fuel and one night in a hotel has got to be cheaper than shipping an allison to and from Cali.
