Just a Transgo and converter in a 5 spd? Good luck with that.

Tell me more, I've heard of it being done and havnt confirmed it so I thought I would ask someone who would know. I'm open ears[/QUOTE]

In a 5 speed your C2/C3 clutches will be hurt because of design flaws. Fresh stock clutches with full Transgo and good converter will hold 500 hp if you are not hard on it. It needs more pressure and more clutches to hold properly. Some guys have held power with a stock trans. That is the exception, not the rule. You need to do some searching on the DP as we learned all this shit 10 years ago when we all belonged there.

Where you at in southern mo? In I'm west plains and do a little Allison work. Nothing like mike does though, he is the man on Allison's.

Mike, what's your opinion on a transgo and a good converter in a 5speed ally for applications such as this?

hey im in west plains also let me know if you think this is somthing you might want to tackle

i dont race or truck pull its a work truck im a contractor i pull trailers and move equipment every once in awile but on a daily basis its unloaded exept for my tools. but at the same time if im going to spend the money then i dont want to have to worry about it breaking and having to drive like a old lady cause im scared its going to limp

I would get in touch with Tim Hecker to have it built out your way. I can PM you his number if you'd like.

x2 for that area.

That's what I'm thinking also I really don't want to screw it up and than have to pay someone to fix it anyways M&M quoted me $3800 for the whole job 3year 36000 mile waranty said he would guaranty it to 650hp?

A friend of mine uses them to build all of his gasser pulling truck trannys and says they do awesome work

That's too cheap to be done right, whats their labor rate? I am guessing with a price like that he's not using much for parts. Not trying to be a negative nancy, but many have been screwed over on their allison builds in the past whether the shop meant well or not.

You can do it yourself if you want, it's not that hard, all of us that have built them took the plunge at one time. I spent too many days on my personal one my first time, many calls to Mike, and in the end broke the rear housing. Doesn't matter how many you do, every trans has its own little quirks it seems. Win some loose some. If you do it, just pay attention to the little things and keep everything neat clean and organized. Theres only a few special tools you will need to make, they are easy to make.

Heres a picture after stripping everything down and cleaning it. If this picture makes you reach for the Xanax, maybe have it built, its really not as complicated as it seems though but it's not as easy as bolting some parts on either.

Trip down memory lane, been awhile since those days.

Thanks mike, I'll do some reading.

I built mine 2 years ago, around 40k miles on it now. Holds power and shifts good. I rebuilt Allisons when I was in school and built a couple after that to stock specs. Mine was the first performance one I built and it turned out fine. Only issue I had was the rear harness plug didn't seat at first and threw every code in the book haha, easy one to figure out though.

I feel that any good mechanic can rebuild an Allison, but maybe not a high HP build. Builders have lots of little tricks they learn over the years, and if I planned to build a new motor I would've had someone else beef up the trans even farther. Good luck with whatever route you choose.

there is something to be said about having a well known builder build your transmission and have a honest/willing to uphold warranty to go with it. :)

Thanks for all the help I have not done much auto transmission work a couple th350/400's back in the day

But I have been turning wrenches sense I was able to pick one up I have rebuilt and modified everything from a go cart dirt bikes lots of chevy SB gassers to custom Ducati street bikes and I built a custom BMW supercharged stroker 3.0 6cly so I'm not worried about getting elbow deep in it just want to make sure I get a good kit I and do whatever needs done so I don't have to worry about it for another 160000 miles?

SunCoast will sell you a unit for less than that.

Mike sold me a stage IV kit many years ago, and walked me through the build. It lasted 150k miles at over 600hp.

This time around I just bought a built unit from suncoast. I wish Mike could have built it, but we are on opposite sides of the country.

While this pic and thinking about tackling the job didn't make me reach for any Xanax, it did make me feel pretty good about my decision to have my trans built, rather than tackle the job myself:joker:

Just for the sake of throwing it out there, I had my trans built for $4800, and that price came with a billet lid triple disc converter, billet output shaft and C2, P2 fix kit and something else, I can't remember anymore...:eek:lcoot:
