Well two years of drag racing @ 520hp and 400hp as a daily driver and the trans smoked. It was built with a MLG convertor. Driving down the highway at 70mph after 30 min noticed smoke behind the truck, looked down at the gauges when DIC pops up with(trans hot idle engine). got the truck pulled off highway as fast as possible. It turns out it belched about 1-1/2 quarts of fluid out the dip stick, now no forward gears only reverse. Smells seriously burnt, no symptoms noticed before this happened. Any ideas what might have happened?

You probably slipped C1's. Warped them bad. When you were driving down the highway you were in 5th or 6th gear. So C1's wouldn't have been applied. However, if they were warped and dragging they would have built a lot of heat, causing it to belch fluid out and overheat the fluid.

This is only a guess since you haven't provided much information. (Codes, prior issues, etc)

And since reverse uses C3 and C5, that's why you still have reverse.

Without C1 you won't have 1st-4th gear.

In 6th gear accelerating on flat ground, no prior issues. I will pull the codes tomorrow, I have it loaded on my trailer to go to my trans guy so it is not here at the house.

C1's were probably installed wrong.

How many miles since it was built?

Who built it? And with what kit?

It's amazing how many people stack c1's wrong and the transmissions will go quite some time that way. I've had 2 come in just the last month with a internal first ending with a external stacked friction down.

Well it lasted for two years of drag racing both years going to the Division 6 Championship so I think it was put together right, probably 20,000 miles and hundreds of passes down the strip since it was built. Not looking to bust any ones balls so at this point not going to mention who it was other than someone well known.

Like Evan said, they will last a lot longer then you would think with them assembled incorrectly.

If you don't want to say who built it that's fine. But you asked for an opinion on what might be wrong and I gave you mine.

Please post what you find.....

I appreciate the input, It should be torn down by mid week and I will post the results. Does this usually take out the torque converter?

For those that don't understand what this means, the last piece of C1 is the backing plate. Which is internal spline. (Hooked to the input shaft) If the last C1 plate before that is external spline (hooked to C1 hub) with steel up, that means that you have a steel on steel situation.

The only time that the last C1 plate before the backing plate should be external spline is if you install the C1 pack friction "up".

Most of this stuff is just common sense stuff but it's amazing how many people miss the basic stuff when building a transmission....

If the C1's were stacked wrong, it would never have gone this long.
I'll bet this was a Alto kit with red eagles and it did as much as can be expected.

Awhile back over on DP somebody did some pictures and write ups on his, and he showed his stacked the wrong way so that it would be metal on metal against each other. I pointed it out, and he argued with me about it, said it was together and running fine. Wished him luck on the rebuild when that metal on metal took it's course.

Good info is not shared on forums anymore. It keeps the forum techs guessing. A plain gmax kit is a thing of the past.

It's all become top secret. It gives them an advantage over the next guy.

This forum is my favorite for sure. People help each other out and work towards making these truck better as a whole. If there is something we can't handle we point them in the right direction.

I have tried getting information from other forums and sometimes I get what I need but not very often.

One was LLY that was like that for over a year and c1 still hadn't failed when I took it apart. The other was a well known 2.6 puller that did well for years like that and c1 was still ok he just wanted a refresh because it had been so long.
