Just curious how many people have seen pump failures and how many times have you seen it?

I have seen 5 in the past 2 years and they have all been random except one which was junk right out of the Allison box.

Just curious on numbers.

My 5 speed with 172k miles was bad when Mike rebuilt my trans for me last month. He showed me pump. Interesting I must say though in regards to 6 speeds.

Mike, do the trans show or have a telltale sign when pump is wearing out? I figure line pressure is dropping so would it show up as constant higher values in the TAP cells then normal? Longer engagement times? Flares?

It takes a trained eye to see a pump that is about to go out. They will transfer metal from one side to the other.
Pump gears are made of sintered metal ( powdered steel compressed ) This makes a better bearing surface for better wear. Kinda like babbit bearings on the crank minimizing wear. The pump gears are harder and are prone to gaul ( transferring metal from one side to the opposing side ) Once you see the slightest gauling; your pump is done.
Wonder how many alli's have been built with weak ass pumps that are about to grenade.
Wonder why you have weird problems after a so called build? Throwing a clutch pack into the trans will put you back on the same road of disaster as you are trying to fix. you must look deeper.:D

Had a bad pump in a 5 speed that ate a c2 clutch. Pretty obvious grooves everywhere. Surprised that the contaminates from the clutch pack were enough to damage not only the pump housing but the pump gears, had to replace the whole thing.

It's amazing how many components we have in our vehicles that are made from powdered metal.
