I have an opportunity to go to Alaska this year. I honestly don't know very much about the state other than great hunting and fishing opportunities (which I plan to partake in) so I would like to find a place that I can do those activities with minimal tourist dealings if possible. Any suggestions?

You will not find such a place on the road system. Lots of places to fly out to, but not cheap. Big game hunting if you are thinking of doing that is pretty spendy for a non resident.

What Ken said spendy. The AK is nothing like the states, travel is tough up here. Need a plane, jet boat, Quad, snowmachine, swamp buggy, I think thats about it:D. If you have the money a guided trip would be the best, otherwise you really need live here awhile to learn where to go.

What exactly do you want to do? When are you coming up?
Where are you going to be, South East-Juneau, South Central-Anchorage, Central-Faribanks, Western Alaska-Naknek/King Salmon.
Fishing: Fresh water or salt water?
Hunting: What game, moose, cariboo, bear, sheep, goat?

As had been said before, all of this is expensive for out of state folks. Big game hunts MUST be guided for non-residents, this is BIG$$.

Fishing is great and not to much $$ for the limited out of state license, 3 day or 7 day...if you stay on the road system and do not mind combat fishing with TONS of other folks. If you want to get away from the other people, you will need to get a fly in charter. There are lots of flying services that will get you off the beaten path, Rust's Flying Service is a big name, there are others. FWIW, I have never used them, but I see a lot of their planes over my house.

The timing of your trip will dictate what types of activities/species are available. Big game hunting is in late August to September. Different salmon run at different times starting in about mid June through about early September. Salt water halibut fishing is pretty much all summer.

If you want a big game hunt, start booking last fall....

Whatever you do, make sure you have all the licenses and tags required, get a copy of the regulations, http://www.adfg.state.ak.us/ . Fish and Game enforcement is VERY strict. They can take everything you have with you-rod/reel, gun, tent, sleeping bags, truck, boat, plane, EVERYTHING if you are found to be "poaching" whether intentional or not.

I hope this helps, and I hope you have a great trip. :)

I can get you the info on the lodge I stayed at on the Kenai if you want? It's a beautiful place with modern log cabins 20' from the Kenai river awesome fishing, great hospitality and really reasonable rates. Fishing package we did was, 2 days on the ocean fishing, 2 days on the river in the boat for King's, and 2 days just fishing the shores for reds. We also took a float plane to a private lake and fished for silvers with blk bears 15' from us, Awesome trip!!!:thumb:
