What filters sizes and media type is everyone running for componds or big singles? When i built my compond kit, I just ordered a normal style 5 inch AFE pro 5R, but it seems to be sucking it flat or atleast distorting the filter. I ordered a oval filter to try to get more surface and switched to a Pro Dry S media. From what a gathered from the AFE guy I talked to the oiled filters are designed for the media to tear when they get dirty to attempt to deliver max air flow. I think I would rather just blow out my filter every oil change than get a new one about every 10000 miles. Granted I think I need to set up to a 5.5 or 6 inch filter for the S488, but that big of 90 degree bends are hard to find especally with a tight radius.

You’re going to need a much bigger filter, or two. My plan is to run a tube down to the bottom of the grill with to filters and build a shroud so water doesn’t get to them.

The current one i'm using on my twin truck is a AFE (72-90041) with a pre filter (28-10143) . I also used 5" 90 with a 5.5" radius from summit p/n APH-10796
I tried the AFE Pro dry first p/n 21-90041 and it let fine dust through so I went back to a oiled filter the pro gard 7 above, no more dirt with the oiled filter. I'd rather clean a MAF every once in a while then dust my motor.

I have thought about making an air box that panel style filter the sides and floor vs a single filter. I don't think that the 5 intake pipe is an issue, its more about how many CFM of air you can put threw a filter that is 6in diameter by 9in long.

Were you running a prefilter with the Pro Dry as well?

The older filter was AFE Part Number: 24-91039 and the new one is AFE Part Number: 21-91044 if anyone wants to see sizes

realisitically, you wont get a filter large enough for the CFM flow and filter air as it needs to be. And 10k before cleaning the filter? damn! id go every 3-4k (an oil change for me) and clean it.

i ran the largest filter AFE made in the pro7 at the time and it was an oiled one. Dry filters just dont catch the fine fine particles unless its a stock paper style.

Generally it would have been cleaned at every oil change, but of that 95% was highway driving.

Yeah I was but I also live in Northern Nevada to so quite a few dirt roads have the powdery bug dust. Maybe the prodry might be ok on street truck that never see's a dirt road but who knows.

I'd build a air box I've been wanting to do something for a while because my intake air temps have got up to 160+F (50-60 over ambient) in the summer towing. I been dinking with it trying to box the filter in and got it down to 20ish over ambient working the truck hard. Unloaded it's fine usually within 5-10 degrees, I think the only way to get it decent is build a box or somehow get some filters out of the engine bay.

S&b will custom make you filters. At least they use to cause i had it done on another truck of mine. I'm running a power driven diesel on my race truck and have been happy with it so far.

Look at the stuff PDD has. Filters are made by R2C

I did, but according to there website, they are out of stock.

I not on gravel or dirt very much, so hopefully it's not a problem, I did order a prefilter, hopefully it works. I think the air box filter will be the best for everything overall since the under hood temp can hurt overall performance.

I run the same AFE filter as you, and do the same thing to it with my S371. I've stoved in 2 of them so far. Bought the 7-layer version and that one is in one piece still, so maybe it works better?

I wish I could even get 5k miles on a filter. They're usually black as can be by 3k miles, and if I run them to 5k they stove in like that. I wish there was more room on the right side of the engine bay for a huge paper element like they run on the Ford 6-leaker or medium duty trucks.

I use Banks CAI on mine with a DP 72mm. I'm using banks dry version of the filter and can go 50,000 miles without a problem. Banks filter is large. I'll post a pic of what my filter looks like after 10,000
