Aftermarket head unit disables compass/ temperature display?

Hey everyone,

I want to install an aftermarket head unit on my LBZ with the Bose system. Bluetooth/ hands free would be nice and am looking at alpine ILX-650 or Kenwood/pioneer equivalents; basically any mid range touch screen that is Apple/android compatible.

My question is this: all of the head units I am looking at on crutchfield say that the installation of these head units will disable the factory temp/compass display that shows on the rear view mirror. Is this the casa no matter which head units I use? I really don’t wanna lose those if possible; I know they seem minor but I would prefer keeping them even if it means finding a different head unit. But every unit I’ve looked at says these will be disabled.

Has anyone installed these with that effect?

Thanks

I’ve done several head unit swaps with no issues. Maybe I should pay attention more but I’ve never even seen that warning. They are on a completely different circuit

Yeah I wouldn’t think they’re related at all but I figured I would pose the question since it said it on crutchfield that it will be disabled

It’s the second bullet point under installation notes.

Wonder if that's the case for the GMT-900 (LMM) trucks? OP is your truck a NBS or classic 07? If classic, maybe switch the model year to 2006 and see if Crutchfield still gives the same warning?

They have an option for classic and I did also try it with 06 and same thing! Interesting for sure

The temperature and compass are completely standalone. You won't lose them. My brother and I swap the Gentex mirror out of the GMT800 in to all sorts of other vehicles to get the temp/compass display. Not sure why Crutchfield has that listed.

We just put this one in my sons 2004 GMC 2500

CarPlay works great. Easy install. Only real con is the screen is a bit bright, even on dim, at night.

I’ve installed several Sony XAV-AX5000 head units, and they are nice. Simple UI, carplay works great, nice EQ. Not a ton of options, but that’s what keeps it simple. Screen size is 7”, and it has actual volume buttons which is nice. Look it up on Crutchfield. $75 off right now.
