Question: After market Transmission Cooler Question

Is it best to run it by itself or is it best to use it in unison with the existing factory system that's in place ? Which way will yield the best results . I'm thinking of adding a Derale 15780 that incorporates an electric fan with a shroud . My truck is not a DD but a weekend street/strip truck . Not a bracket racer . More of a heads up racer . Just looking to have optimum transmission fluid temps at all times even after a hard 1/8 or 1/4 mile run .

People do it both ways I think. It takes a big cooler to keep up if you only run the aux cooler

Ok . The Derale 15870 is the biggest they offer at 40 row , 67,000 BTU/hr with 1/2" lines and a 10" 800 CFM fan I believe . Any idea as to the pressure the trans cooler lines see at their highest ?

Not sure on that.. I know my tranf flush machine shows around 100 psi on line pressure through the cooler on stock tucks but I don't know how accurate that is.

Your going to want sometbing rated to 300 psi if I remember right

Look up Philadelphia thread the white devil, If I remmeber right theres a bunch of trans cooler talk in there.. He had two big aux coolers bed mounted with fans

Yea I saw that although I don't think they were as big as the one I'm considering . I will probably just intercept the fluid returning back to the trans from the existing cooler and route it thru the new one then back to trans .

should be rated to hold 350+ pressure spikes and depending on what pressure springs and shims you run, pressure can be over 300psi constant.

i would run the stock heat exchanger and the derale cooler.

It's not much more lines and routing to keep the stock radiator in the loop. So run it through the radiator cooler, then out to your add on, and back to the trans.

I have Mike L cooler in the factory place and have no issues with trans temps. The only time you should have problems is if you hot lap it a bunch or have to sit on the converter for a long time staging.

I've noticed that the other factor that affects it is the amount of stall . I previously had a 2200--2300 stall and didn't have any issues . With this big stall that I'm currently running the temperature spikes a lot quicker and easier. I have been told by my local converter shop that converters get to a point where they become heat pump . But yes I agree on the hot lapping creating higher temps .

Yes it's bigger. I tossed a Spal fan on top of both of mine as well.

with the OPs truck being an 06, i dont think he will find a fan small enough that will move enough air to be worth it. same issue i have with my current engine oil cooler

I have a Kodiak in here I'm adding a cooler to (for some reason they only have the cooler in the radiator tank on this one without another external cooler) because the trans temps started getting a little too hot towing after the trans was built. I'm using a Hayden 1290 cooler with a Derale 16818 shrouded electric fan. If you can find a place to mount that monster on your truck, I bet it would do a lot to keep your temps down.
