I was testing my after market backup camera before I installed it and noticed that it builds a little heat when powered on. When I installed it on my LBZ I picked up power for the camera from the reverse lights so that it would not be on all the time. Now there is a delay before the image shows up on my Edge CTS.

Does anyone have any input about leaving the camera powered up all the time? Are there any negative effects on the camera as far as its longevity from being powered up all the time?

Where I am at we cannot legally have the camera on because we can not have a video display on when traveling, except for GPS.

I wired the cam to a switch in my wife's Trailblazer because of the difficulty of getting to the backup wiring (rear lift gate, and BCM under rear seats). She just uses the switch.

Hers will also be slow to come up sometimes. Because of the wiring issues, I ran the video cable from the back to the front instead of relying on the wireless setup.

Hope this helps.

where is the heat generating?

Not sure if the heat came from one single area.

When I received the camera I plugged it in to the back of my CTS and used the cigarette lighter power cord it came with to make sure everything worked well. That was about 6 months ago. It has infrared led's in it for night use and I am almost certain that it did get just slightly warmer to the touch than it was before i powered it up. I did not repeat the test when I installed it so I have no recent reference for the heat location.

When I had time a few days ago I ran the wire and was thinking about it getting warm and decided to pickup my 12v from the backup lights so it would not always be on, now there is a little delay.

I know that led's do last a while, but nothing lasts forever. I want to know if I will see a significant reduction in the life of this camera if I leave it powered on all the time.
