I am new to the diesel world and I am currently looking to trade my car in on LBZ. The only performance mods I currently plan on installing are, ppe standard or efi live, 5" turbo back straight pipe, trans-go jr, boost and pyro gauge's and possibly inter-cooler upgrade.. But before i jump right into "go fast" parts I'm wondering if there should be any modifications or upgrades that obtain primarily to reliability and longevity of the truck.
Thank you for any advise

EGR delete, pcv reroute, tie rod sleeves, pump rub t case plate and lift pump should be done to every single one of these trucks right off the bat

Definately EGR block plate at the least or delete fully. PCV Reroute, EFI Live, Exhaust, Downpipe, transgo jr, gauges, Hot side intercooler pipe, lift pump for extra filtration and ease for the CP3 and call it good.

This is basically my set up currently and I get 17.8 mpg hand calculated, half city/ half back roads going 12 miles one way to work. Just over 109,000 miles on my truck as well.

Buy the ppe canned tuna, that way you will be able to clear codes and look at injector rates and other miniscule crap. Run it on the 225 tune full time but only use the power when "necessary":D that's how i ran my truck for years and that's also the tune that netted me the best mileage. I now run efi... Both efi and ppe tunes can max out the "stock" motor. You can usually score a ppe tuna under$400 in the classifieds

Go efi if you plan on upgrading turbos, injectors, or other big boy stuff.

To summarize, get 4" "regular folk" exhaust, block egr,Ppe tuner, Pcv re-route, lift pump, modify your stock air filter housing, trans go jr, and some sleeves for your tie rods.

PPE will block EGR codes as well. I am pretty happy with mine, just know that like all other tunes, you can easily run enough power to ruin your stock trans.

I would go with the PPE, best tuner on the market. Great mileage, drivability is second to none and huge power. I would hold off on the intercooler, I personally dont think there necessary at the daily driver power level.

The EFI is sounding better to me, I'm guessing If I decide to do more mods in the future I can get a new tune downloaded into the EFI?

The one thing I regret about getting a PPE versus EFIlive was the ability to have a valet tune, dunno why but I cannot stand to leave my truck at any shop for alignment or stuff I can't do. Having the ability to have mph etc severely limited, would be awesome.

EFI Live for sure!!!! I have been using it for about 6 years now and love it. Awesome thing is now shops are selling it with a custom made tune for you. Get the EFI Live that comes with a DSP5 switch. Then you can select from multiple tunes without even having to turn off the engine. Also, EFI Live isnt just for Duramax, you can also tune just about everything GM and now a lot of Dodge Cummins too.
Bottom line, the EFI live will cost you more in the short run.... but you will never be able to grow out of it like you will with any CAN Tuner no matter how good it is. Another positive about EFI live, the support you get from both the company and their forum is incredible!
Hope all goes well regardless of what you decide!
Welcome to the club!

You can get EFI Live with the autocal and log or clear codes as well. Usually in the mid to high six hundred dollar range. There is no substitute for custom tuning so don't waste your money on the others.

Your PPE tuner can limit the speed all the way down to 40MPH, Go to "calibrations", "speed limiter", select the MPH you want and "install tune", Valet mode ....:D
