i am master auto certified, and just took the l1 advanced engine diagnostics test, there just a bunch of tests based on theory only not what we see in the industry, some techs that have a lot of expeience without any formal training have a little trouble with them but if you get the study guides online it's not that bad

I have passed a couple of the tests, but I'm not certified because I don't have the required 2 years of full time experience necessary for certification. The two tests I took seemed to be pretty straight forward for the most part. Just like with any test, some of the questions are poorly written, but both tests I took, I passed with no problems. I briefly looked over a study book for maybe 30 minutes before I took the test, but I didn't do any intense studying and have no formal training.

Is it (test) written or hands on? I remember when I did my MAC certification for ac, it might as well be written in chinese. But I could perform job in my sleep.

Written. Multiple choice. The number of questions depends on the test, but the ones I took were around 50. A lot of the questions are troubleshooting type stuff.

Take the computer based version its much easier...ive done it both ways for all 8 sections, imop you need some kind of material to study when you get in the more advanced parts! watch where you get it too they can be a rip off!

seems like the tests were very outdated and geared more towards the early 90's vehicles, not stuff you are working on today. Take the computer based and take one at a time. Good luck
