Guys for the money, specs, durability which compressor am I better off going with for my small shop. I run 2 tire machines, and air tools even though Ive personal switched to all lithium power tools snap on/milwaukee stuff no need for air impacts for my applications. Both have a 12% rebate though Rural King right now. Does anyone know who makes the dewalt compressor?

Ingersoll Rand is $923.00

No specific feedback on those models but we have had really good luck with out big IR compressors over the past 10-15 years

Ingersoll Rand is damn good stuff. dad has had that same compressor for 10 years. its not very quite though

IMHO, it wont be enough to run all you say you need though. If you get busy and are using both tire machines and an air gun or two, it will drain that tank fast. My dad has a harbor freight sand blast machine and that compressor barely keeps up with it. My 80 gal compressor runs at 13cfm (runs at half speed to keep noise down) and it will keep up with my die grinders and plasma cutter but the pump only gets a few short breaks if i am going all out that day in fab work.

Discount tire uses 1 120 gal 20cfm pump for two machines and two bays (3 air guns) and they can actually cycle without running all day

Good feedback guys, my concern was running both machines at the same time if the 80 was going to be enough. This was my third option for $1300 cash and I take my fork lift and trailer about 2 hrs away. I DO NOT want 3 phase, but it has the motor included.

I have been using my 60 gal Sanborn now which is old and tired and its only been running 1 machine, but in process of moving shops.

If you can buy the one off craigslist for $1,300 you'd be better off (if it runs good). Always better to have to much compressor than not enough.

I don't blame you there, but it is very big and wanted to put it in separate room, could always make room bigger.

Anything I need to look over buying used specifically?

Thanks

id buy that in a heart beat! the 10hp single phase isnt as efficient as running the 3 phase motor but if you have no 3 phase at the shop, that motor he includes is the best option.

Why are you against 3 phase? Is it available at your shop?

70hp has me spoiled. Spools up in the morning first thing, then idles most of the day. You may hear it spool up once or twice when everyone is running sanders or the welding shop is running the cooling jets. We use Boge, maybe see if they make something that will fit your needs.

I don't have 3 phase available, I own my new building so I can do whatever I want with it. I know the 3 phase is more efficient, but was told it could be a pain to get all setup.

How much are we talking to add 3 phase service? I can find used 3 phase all day long for good prices as well.

single phase to 3 phase converter to run 3 phase off of single phase, a new service is going to be expensive.

The 2 compressors you posted first are no where near the compressor on craigslist.

I'd also rather buy a Quincy than those two. But I'd pick up that 120 on Craigslist any day over those others.

My neighbor runs a shop on his Ingersoll Rand like the one you posted, 3 guys off one compressor and it keeps up. I know 3 people with it so I just bought one 2 weeks ago, very nice compressor for the money.

being that the compressor already has a single phase on it, hes better off going that route than building a phase converter. it was the same cost to buy a nice new motor for my compressor than to build a phase converter and run the 3 phase unit that came on my compressor originally.

If you want an 80 gallon for space reasons I have a maxair compressor and I'm very happy with it. They move a ton of air.

Guys,

What should i check over on the speedaire? I will mostly go with that unit at this point for only a couple hundred more.

Also what filter setup should I look at for the money?

Run it and bleed it off to make it cycle several times. There isn't a whole lot to go wrong with compressors other than getting worn out. To keep it simple, they either work or they don't. It's like buying a used truck, you may have to work on it you may not.

James thanks that is very helpful and good to know.

What filter setup.....any suggestions?

i dont have much to offer there. i run two harbor freight dryers on my setup and it works well. had to make a thicker diaphram for the pressure adjustment though. they split easily. We run them on all our setups here at the shop as well as a large custom cooler (looks like a small radiator) with fan to cool the outgoing air and trap moisture right from the compressor. drain the tank and air lines once a week to get any water out it. People that owned the building before us built shutters and they had 4 150 gal compressor that ran damn near all day from what the old owner told us.
