6.4 PSD questions?

My cousin and her husband just bought a 08 F250 with the 6.4. Truck immediately started having problems. Plugged DPF and EGR problems. How bad of a job is deleting the EGR? Can you use a blocker plate or do you need to remove the EGR system completely? Do you need to lift the cab to do either? What is a decent cheap tuner to run? They aren't looking to build more power but just eliminate codes. I've never worked on a ford diesel and don't know a lot about them. Thanks for any advise.

This is gonna come off bad but. This is a Duramax diesel site why would we know this stuff?
If this person was smart in the first place they would have went on a FORD FORUM and found out what POS's they are and bought a Dmax and be here for fun stuff :thumb: I mean no disrespect just saying it how it is

I would do some searching online. Plenty of good forums out there for other vehicles and engines. Even total junk like the 6.4 powerchokes.

Oh wow I'm sure someone here works on fords.

Doesn't SCT tune them? Not sure if you can still get tuning that'll do what you want.

Yes you can block them, very easy two plate deal. Simple delete pipe and gearbox z tuner is the easiest and cheapest..

If you need anymore info pm me. I know where you can get all of it at

I had a 2010 6.4. I bought the sct tuner thru and the egr delete with intake elbow from them.

FYI many members on this site own their own diesel shops and make a good living fixing PSD's along with Duramax's and Cummins. :thumb:

Delete it completely
Stick will all motorcraft fluids and filters and a very strict Maintence schedule. Also I would do a coolant flush ASAP and make sure it has gold coolant in it. And do not run it on kill mode.

I work on Ford, Dodge, GM, and some medium duty stuff every day.

Egr can just be plated. Definitely do a coolant flush and fill with the proper coolant. There are cheaper tuners/boxes out there to do deletes but a lot of them do not support full deletes. Meaning the temp probes and other emissions components have to stay plugged in. Spend the money and buy an sct with custom tunes. If the trucks been run for long service intervals between oil changes there's a good chance it's got excessive rocker arm wear at the minimum. They are bad about fuel dilution, especially if they have been regenning frequently. Even deleted service every 5k miles. Cab does not need to be lifted to remove egr coolers.

If you need anything feel free to pm me. 6.4's bought my first house.

I got an 08 model in 09 and deleted and tuned it right away.. But I ran rotella engine oil and never did a coolant flush or any maintenance other than what the lube shop did every 6k to 8k miles and I ran it to 100k miles with no problem.. Lol and also ran on the biggest tune all the time.. (Spartan tuning at that)

There is always someone working on a Ford regardless of what they drive daily. I bet I could ask any Powerstroke question or a Cummins question and someone could at minimum ballpark it since half of everyone here has owned either one. Personally once you master a cab pull they are the most convenient to work on...
The 6.4 isn't the worst platform, the turbos lack reliability when the emissions equipment is intact and the way that is designed to fire for the emissions equipment causes cylinder wash over a period of time so I would call Powerstroke Engineering out of TX for tuning assistance. Deleting and tuning that truck is gonna save you a lot of headache down the road.

Also stay away from puddles, the air filter will out drink an Irishman in Utah if you hit the right puddle, happens to our F550 service trucks at least once a year.

I put the delete plates, removed cat and dpf section of exhaust and replaced with a flo pro section and did a h&s, truck runs strong, def recommend doing it sooner than later
