A few months ago I got in a bad spot at a stoplight when I had to get on the brakes pretty hard. When I came to a stop it felt something unusual, a hard downshift maybe. I shifted to reverse and backed up so a semi could make his turn and when I shifted back into drive I got the shift range inhibited message and no forward movement. I went to neutral, shut it off, restarted, put the truck back into drive and it took off normally and I haven't had a problem since. I was due for a fluid change (transynd) anyway so I dropped the pan and replaced the internal filter while I was at it. I bought the trucked used several years ago from a guy who I know is particular about maintenance (serviced at dealership) but started thinking a fluid change may have been neglected. In reality, I'm not 100% positive how many miles was on the fluid. I took a picture of the bottom of the pan after I wiped some of it off with a rag. Is it normal to have this kind of residue on the bottom of the pan or should I be setting aside some money for a rebuild? The truck has 172,000 on it now, is a daily driver, rarely tows anything over 3,000lbs, and I have a light foot.
