GM Statement Regarding the Duramax 4.5L V-8 Diesel

Given the current economic climate, GM has reviewed and updated its U.S. product portfolio and has decided to place on indefinite hold its previously announced plan to add a Duramax 4.5L V-8 diesel engine in 2010 to its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light-duty trucks.

Chevrolet and GMC will continue to offer a heavy duty Duramax 6.6L V-8 diesel, which is class-leading in both horsepower and torque. Light-duty truck customers can also choose from several fuel-efficient gasoline engines with GM’s Active Fuel Management mated to a six-speed transmission or a new 2-Mode hybrid that provides up to 40 percent improved city fuel mileage and 25 percent improvement in overall fuel efficiency. In fact, no other full-size pickup has better fuel economy.

GM remains optimistic that the Duramax 4.5L V-8 diesel may be a viable option in its future portfolio.

while i thinks its a poor descision by gm i have no need for a 1/2 ton diesel , if they put stout enough parts behind it to hot rod out maybe but parts that stout are 3/4 ton parts then what do you have a 3/4 ton truck with soft springs and underpowerd by comparison . i see why they are doing it . but a diesel options for the suv's makes alot of sence to me but 1/2 ton pickups i dont know .

Totally agree, why buy a 1/2 ton period. You get much more bang for your buck when you buy a 3/4 ton.

The 4.5 would have opened up a whole new world for diesels in America. Diesel luxury cars, SUV's, 1/2t pickups, etc. Vehicles that are still in demand, yet traditionally get poor mileage.

I guess it will be a good idea when Toyota or BMW does it instead.

Personally I blame our elected officials. Government intervention into private industry is mainly responsible for this recession, and government attacks against US automakers is responsible for their decline.

Bin Laden never did as much damage to us as our own prima donna congressional fools.

I disagree. I wanted one because 95 plus percent of the time I use my truck for daily commuting. If I could get a 1/2 ton with the 4.5 that gets better mileage and drives that much nicer than my 3/4 ton, I'd trade in a heartbeat.

Those that actually use a 3/4 ton for what it was meant to be used for, I see your point.

I just love trucks and diesels and a 1/2 ton or Yukon would have suited me just fine. Plus like Pat said it opens up a whole new ballgame. So much for my diesel CTS now too probably.

I'm with 05smoker.

The only real reason I bought a 3/4 ton is to have a diesel. I tow what amounts to "diddly poop". I could use my wife's Touareg for the work that I ask my truck to do.

I was really looking forward to the 4.5L, but maybe I'll just wait or start saving the coin for the BMW x5 with a diesel.

They should at least offer the burban with a 6.6 and the h2 with it as well, it would keep most happy for the time being, untill they get the 4.5 out. I agree as well as it would be nice to have a half ton for the fuel milage, but i never even thought of that when i got my diesel, i was too exited abot being able to pull the world around if i needed.:d

We agreee whole heartedly Pat. You just have to look at the cutting edge diesel technology in Europe, and the diesel vehicles used by the rest of the world.

This decision will really slow down the move for diesel into smaller vehicles for the USA. I guess the USA has spent ALOT of time trying to make decisions about which alternative fuel will work best, even when technology and infrastructure didn't exist while the rest of the world just got on with developing and adapting exisitng technology.

On another note, although this is a disappointing decision, Ross was breathing a sigh of relief given the ECM we saw in the 4.5 :)
