So im goin to buy a rock buggy chassis this weekend to start building a buggy will be mainly for playin on the rocks but will also hit the dunes a few times.

at this point all it has is a frame, cage, seats, dash, springs, rear air shocks, rear toyota pickup IFS axle, and possibly a semi built 85 yota front axle (depends on how we can work out the price). It wont have a motor, trans, t-case/s, driveshafts or steering. No biggy to me as i mainly wanted something mostly caged already.

So for drivetrain im gunna stick with yoat axles on 37s for now, 4.3 v6 up front with a th350 behind it, and either a 203/205 doubler or 231/d300 doubler, or something along those lines.

Now, the 4.3 will probably be TBI just for ease of workin on them and reliablitly on the trail. But im gunna want to try and squeek some more HP out of her. Anyone have any ideas on a good cam, intake mani, ect to go on top of this? plan is not to get into the bottom end (if the motor i pick up is good). maybe throw a set of the vortech heads on it if will work with the TBI manifolds? Not building a full out racer, just lookin for little things i can do while shes out of the buggy to get a bit more HP from her.

James, you should have no problem finding a Vortec 4.3L. You would be money ahead just to buy a full vortec than to part one together. My engine builder may have a few laying around I can ask him if you want.

Also if any engine work needs to be done, he does great work and is very reasonable on cost. Give me a call and I'll get you his number.

Thanks ben. I dont like the vortech motors only because of the intake manifold and those internal injectors. I had my fair share of headaches with those just on the 350s. I can live the decrease in hp i may have over the vortech with a tbi setup. I just didnt know if the better flowing vortech heads (if they even really are) would direct swap over or not if i ran into a deal on them. Goin with the vortech means more money, more expensive harness, and more wiring. I wanna keep her simple and on a budget

Why not a 4.8 vortec they can be had cheap and parts for gen III/IV's are endless.

you are not going to get any kind of power from a tbi 4.3 they are only 160 horse I think the 4.8 is 290hp

i dont feel like trying to shoe horn it in to a samurai frame (thats what the buggy is based off of) nor do i really want the extra torque. Im not looking for big hp, the chassis weights 2100lbs and they guy ran a 1.6l tracker motor in it before (80hp at best). what the 4.3l can put out will be plenty for me. if i want more, ill turbo it :D

They made a few TBI 4.3L VORTECS in full size pick-ups, or you can run a carb intake with a marine spacer to run a VORTEC engine with a TBI injection system.

James I had a TBI 4.3 in my 88 S10 blazer. I bored it .030 over and put Hypereutectic pistons in it. I put a comp magnum 4x4 cam and an edelbrock performer TBI intake on it. I used the chip from edelbrock in the computer and it would run a little rich at idle sometimes but it had some serious freakin torque. I tore two sets of motor mounts out of it wheelin and pulling people out. My last setup was a dana 60/14 bolt with 38.5s and 5.38 gears and the little v6 would still spin the shit out of them.

Hey James,

How's your transfer case rebuild?

Just did the drain & fill on the Allison this week and was staring at my t-case - it's fine.
But, I was thinking that you were waiting to get back into town (and cooler weather) to do yours.

If it's still on the books, I'm available to hold the flashlight or call 911 (my only skills ).

Lol i aint done it yet still. Its not a high priority so it hasnt made the list top yet. Right now i have to fix some things on the sami, cut part of my roof on the house and do away with these stupid stucco tear drop sides on the house so i can get the trailer back in there easier, fill in the pool, then i can start on my neglected truck unless the fiances car craps out.
