Caldwell , Oh
Is any one having problems doing a 3rd gear start on their daily drivers . I will be hauling my camper and other anonymous trailers and am wanting to do a 3rd gear start while using the stock computer ( so I don't have to spend $400 on a new one ) .

Opinions??
Lets have em .

For pulling in 4lo? If so it can be done in 4lo only and will be normal in D. Third gear starts might not be the best thing for a DD unless it wasn't real often.

I have a third gear start from trent and it is activated by engaging the tow haul. I drive the truck every day. I just don't turn the tow haul on unless I am sled pulling.

I don't want to tow my camper in third gear . I want it to lock into 3rd in low range for sled pulling and be normal in 2wd and 4hi . ( I guess I should have thought my first post out a little better )

I should also say its not actually a "Daily" driver I drive another vehicle to work most of the time but it is no trailer queen when it comes to truck pulls .

Mike L . what convertor would be good for this type of application . Towing and still able to do a 3rd gear start . Or am I just gonna fry every convertor I try ?

Pretty sure it wont create anymore TC heat besides when its unlocked for that short little time. There is a table in efi live trans tuning that only affects 4lo applications, also one for "hot trans". Maybe be able to set the temp to protect it by changing the shift pattern to allow 2nd to 3rd. Just if that becomes a huge problem.

Hell if I know. Did I give bad info, what was wrong with it notice I said "pretty sure". Seems to make plenty of sense to me. Or are you just offended that I gave my opinion in "your trans talk"?

I see how it is easy enough to program the 4-lo shift tables to do 3rd only, but I'm assuming you use an external lockup module to force the converter clutch to lock once your rolling? Otherwise, it never will, and Mike is right - the converter will get smoky hot.

Anytime you take off in a higher gear you force the converter to multiply more tq ( slip ) then it should. That builds more heat than normal because it will stall much higher and you won't have the lower gear multiplication to help move the mass.
