3.73s or 4.10's

hi all. just ordered a 2016 3500 dually, 4x4 crew cab. coming out of a LLY that pulls great.. just awful on fuel.. under 9mpg towing at 70, milage goes up (a lot ) at 75. anyway, figured its time to look into a new truck. ordered it with the 3.73's being how well the LLY does. however now i'm kinda second guessing not going with the 4.10's. normally pull a 32' inclosed race trailer with everything could be up to 10k. might go to a 44' goose with living quarters. so... what do you guys think?

Depends on where you're located. Around my area i'd want 4.10 so i could be in 5th and 6th more often towing. But if you're in a flat area, shouldnt be needed.

i live in ny (long island) but we do travel going racing. could go anywhere though. with the 5 speed in the LLY over 70 it rarely drops into 4th.

Well I can say this. With 4.56 gears in my truck and 37" tires. It's like I have the stock 245s back on the truck. Towing at 70 I see 2150rpm and boost comes on quick there. Fuel mileage is the same from when I had 3.73s and was at 1800rpm at 70 but everything is cooler and runs better.

So imho, if you plan on getting that big of a trailer down the road, get the 4.10s. You still get the drop in 6th which will drop you close to 2000rpm but hills will be nicer and getting off the line

lol the truck being quick off the line don't bother me at all. i own a trucking company just don't know the sweet spot of these new motors. i normally cruise 70mph just want optimal running rpm for fuel milage/power is. I'm seeing people with the LML motors ( i think thats what the 2016's are) and i'm reading 10-14mpg towing which i'm fine with. just not sure of the gear ratios

4.10 gear with 32" tall tires (235/85/16) will put you little shorter legs then stock 3.73 with 215/85/16

With what you're looking at towing and where you are.. As I've been there.. 4.10s would get my vote with a 5 speed Allison.. Still have some top end for DDing and would definitely help out all that stop n go on LIE and everything else

I have a 6speed and went 4.56 with 32" tires great for heavy and high sail loads.
But she feels "winded" by herself running down the freeway..
Probably gone 4.30s on my setup

I have found sweat spot to be 2000-2400 +/-100rpm

tires will be stock always. my race car is light 2200lbs, but factor in the trailer all the equipment i'm looking about 9000lbs. if i get the 44ft with the living quarters i'm thinking about 14k. i mean, either way the truck will be fine with either gears. just don't want to regret.

We are full-time rvers towing a 16.5k 5th, wheel mine has the 3.73s & tows fantastic. The sweet spot on mine is 68mph/1700rpm & making 10.5-11.5 mpg towing with power to spare. Unless you plan to put larger tires on I wouldn't get the 4.10s. This truck is also our daily driver & gets 15-18 mph on average, a bit better on straight highway driving.

Forgot to mention, as far as DEF, I can go approximately 3500 miles on a 2.5 gal jug, about 7000 before the add message comes on & I've never noticed a regen cycle in 71000 miles, I think they've fixed that problem. Just wish they could find a better location to add the DEF, current location is very unhandy.
