If you have the money to buy converters I'd say 2nd gear is the way to go. I just can't see the converter lasting to long with that kind of heat. By the 5th run my times were falling off and the truck felt sluggish launching. Don't get me wrong I had my best times with it. But I wasn't cutting no 2/10 off of my time. I did have consistant 1.7 60's but my best 60's were 1.6's using first. The mph is there using 2nd but there's nothing like the feel or site of a 1st gear launch.

I agree with everything Brayden except for what's in red.I disagree with this being the best set-up. It is totally relevant to your tire size, gearing, trans mods, HP etc...
4th to 6th would be useless for me. I shift into 5th at the 1000' mark and If I could stretch the rpm's and keep the fuel a little longer I would stay in 4th.

Interesting tire size makes that big of a difference I'm in 5th by the 1/8th

I wonder what a 2nd gear launch would do for me i ran 12.39 1st gear launch with a 1.77 60' makes me wonder what could of be had. That run was on a modded 01 race TCM tune that i got from a good friend of mine.

Dose anybody want to share the 2nd gear launch tune with me something like the modded 01 TCM race tune but leaves in 2nd that would be sweet

I'm also in 5th gear at or just before the 1/8th at 85-87 mph

Do you have a modded factory turbo?

Just wondering why you guys think the converters will get hotter launching in 2nd gear. It doesn't take me any longer to stage:confused:

Joey where you hot lapping?

I made 5 passes but there was lots of times between passes:(

I think it may be because the converter slips for longer building heat until it reaches it's lock-up speed.

For example, maybe at 7mph it locks up in first so it slips for a 1/4sec after you launch then locks up, but it doesn't lock in second until 25mph which may take 1.5sec so it slips for 1.25 second longer at a very high torq/hp.

Make sense? These are hypothetical #'s. I don't know the actual lock up speeds or times. Just my take on it.

I think it's harder on the converter because it his having to do more of the work to get the truck moving. In first there is a mechanical advantage so it isn't taking as much abuse as it does pulling the truck from a stop in second gear. I'm no expert though.

Maybe 15 min before the next run. For one, I think my converter is getting tired. I have abused the shit out of it and the whole trans for that matter when I had nitrous on it.
Mine when hot was very inconsistant on the launch. If I had to hold it for any period of time it wouldn't launch near as well as it does when I could just spool and go.

Ol' Black's in retirement for now anyways. She's tired..

This may piss some of you off but, Do you really expect us to believe that your truck run's 12.3's on pure #2 with a bone stock turbo? Come-on now silly. You do relize that there are alot of people with huge chargers not running those times. I don't even know of a reg cab stocker running that fast. Not sure I know anyone that removes a HTT to re-install the stocker just so they can run faster. I have some timeslips that sure do look like yours and I can promise they weren't just #2 run's.

Sorry for the OT but I can't handle anymore BS.:p

As long as you don't sit on the line too long, you are not going to hurt anything in the converter by launching in second.. Another plus for launching in second is no tq management to deal with.

I was having that thought, but I'm not a drag racer so I thought there might have been a reason....:D:D

I know of an '04 Ext cab 4X4 that ran cocnsistant 12.5's with nothing more than a tune exhaust and intake. Truck was a freak. I almost bought it. Don't be too sure his truck didn't run that fast on a stock turbo. :D
