There have been a lot of issue with main bearings on this Ram diesel engine. This new 3rd generation Ram engine is 80 % new so it may have solved the issues. What I mean by not built for the 1/2 ton is that it wasn't built specifically for the Ram. The GM/Chev ecodiesel inline 6 was built specifically for the GM/Chev 1/2 ton.
The Ram1500 ecodiesel is a good truck but i just think that at this point, at least in the recent independent tests shown on Utube, the GM/Chev ecodiesel is out performing the Ram.

I am aware of the issues with the engine and by no means am I saying it's flawless. I agree the new 3.0l Duramax appears much better right now, I've test driven one and will probably get rid of my Jeep for one myself if they prove to be reliable. However, I just disagree that any of the Eco issues stemmed from the oil spec or the fact it was "not designed specifically for the Ram" or Jeep.

Oh, you may be totally right about that. I was just told and read that after the bearing issues they changed the oil type. That is hearsay so you may be right!!

I never liked V6 diesel engines. I have high hopes for the inline 6 GM.

I think it was a brilliant choice to go with an in-line engine. I won’t get into the whole what’s better in-line or v motors, but in-line engines have a huge cult following. I think it will be a big hit with many communities for this very reason as long as they prove reliable. I was talking to my grandpa about this thread and mentioned it being in-line and he lit up that someone is producing another straight 6 diesel. Of course his first comparison was cummins haha

Ya, tht Inline 6 is the way to go. They have better balancing properties. Also the ball bearing turbo they used means little to no turbo lag. I really think GM did this right!

We had some smaller trucks here with the Motori V diesels....they were nothing but problems for our mechanics. Ended up sending them back to Workhorse to be converted back to gas engines.

Yes, that is what i am hearing from mechanics at Chrysler. They hated even working on them.

I also hear there are vendors that may be looking at twinning these with the DPF left intact. That will be interesting. I wonder when they will dedicate a forum thread on here for the D Midmax.

Midmax, I like that. Just thinking about this, if they took any inspiration from the cummins, mods may be easy, at least easier and less tight than our trucks. Just a quick google search, the turbo is in a similar spot to the cummins. The down pipe, if that’s what that even is, looks like a nightmare of emissions equipment however.

Yes emissions are a headache as with all new trucks but with this they have done a few other tricks that are good for soot regen reduction but would make it even harder for mods like twins. I think that most aftermarket guys are thinking of keeping the emissions stuff and doing mods. That is the downpipe and yes it would be a problem that someone with more dmax experience will eventually solve I'm sure. I think the turbo is water cooled ball bearing. It would be interesting to know what type of twin turbo setup would go with this unit.

Just saw Fred Williams of dirt everyday on motor trend I believe has one of these in an AT4 for a few days to drive around and review. Look forward to seeing it. I enjoy these guys and the roadkill content a lot.

Just ordered a dblcab slt 3L on Thurs. Hate to be a guinea pig, but think this truck may be a huge success. (Replacing 5.3L 2014 that has been bulletproof and perfect.)

I drove one today, bad ass truck, it pulls really hard from a dig. I'm even more interested now, funny thing is I looked at another 2500 Denali. Average economy over 47 miles was 9.5, switched over to 1500 diesel and same route netted 23.8 and I was more rough on the 1500...

But how well will it tow what you tow  or better yet, stop what you tow

Currently, the segment leaders in terms of towing ratings are the Ford F-150 Power Stroke and the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel with 11,400 lbs and 12,560 lbs, respectively. The highest number for a Duramax-powered truck is just 9,300 lbs.
That being said, if you are looking for a towing machine I think most would be getting a 2500 or 3500 unit.

My dad was looking at that too. He was going to pick one up but not enough tow rating to justify it.

Curious if it’s a frame or rear axle rating limitation. Pretty sure ford and dodge use a larger rear end than GM or atleast have the option for larger ones over the little 8.6

If that is the rating of that truck, then GM made a huge mistake. I cant believe they wouldnt at least try to make it close to the others.
