I sat in on a meeting this morning with CARB. As of today starting 1-01-10 the CA diesel smog checks will consist of a visual inspection and a modified snap idle test. The modified snap idle test will simply be the test technician snapping the throttle from idle to 3000 rpm in park and looking for smoke against a white background. If your truck smokes you fail.

Don't shoot the messenger.

Easier than ours. Have to pass a tailpipe sniff test on the rollers and a visual. Been that way for a while now. Stock tune will pass you as long as you can get by the visual.....

FWIW my truck went up on the rollers for the sniffer test with a tune and big injectors and still passed with flying colors.

But yeah, load a stock tune just to be safe.

yeah Ben I think thats what I have heard. I am planning on the stock tune putting the cat back in and making sure everything looks stock as possible. I am even going to fabricate a heat sheild for the turbo so it looks stock. It is still a bs test. The tdi forum guys are pissed too the truck and my sons tdi jetta get better mileage with the mods as long as we are not racing them. Better mileage means better fuel burn.

Prediction:

Mechanics with lousy eyesight are going to be in high demand. If he has a seeing eye dog and a white cane, he's your buddy!

x2... it also helps when a buddy has a stock 05 Duramax that can be tested on:D

We have cameras on the inspection stations in MA that show what vehicle was on the test stand at the time of the inspection and the vin (on newer vehicles) is scanned (like at the supermarket) into the computer with the camera watching. Older vehicles you may get away with it if you have the same make, model, color vehicle as a "dummy".

Things are getting tougher and since MA usually follows CA, I'm sure it's not long before we have to deal with this.

What if you could change the vin?

Just another shining example on why you should move from CA to friendlier states.

If everyone who disagreed with the BS would leave then the only people left would be the idiots who believe this crap.

I'll never set up shop in CA, head for a RED STATE and stay there.

But sadly, California is still a "net gain" state. More people move from other states to CA, than Californians move out. It always has been.

They do the same test here on the bigger diesels and busses.

They shoot a beam through the smoke and it has to be able to see a certain amount. There will be equiptment like this used. The word of some guy at a shop saying how much or little smoke will vary and not be good enough test.

If your truck smokes from a tune, then your fine. there looking for diesels with actual emissions issues. If you cant keep your truck from smoking no matter what, then your screwed. 99% of us on here will have no issue passing.

Also they do a cat visual inspection here. whats BS is the truck will pass with flying colors, but they can still fail you without a cat?? Why would you need a cat if truck passes the test?
