I know we have a few hunters on here so I thought I would share my hunting story...sorry for the long-winded story, it was originally written for an archery forum...

It was a great morning to be in a stand...the deer activity around me was early and often this morning.
The morning started off with a buck presenting a shot before I had enough light to see my pins...I had to let down and he walked away. About 15 minutes later I heard what sounded like a herd of buffalo coming through the woods as a doe came running down the side of the hollow full tilt with a small buck hot on her tail. They got in behind me on the side of the bench while I watched three more deer go through the bottom of the hollow. The last was a buck because I could hear him grunting...my grunting didn't phase him.

Just as I got done trying to persuade the third buck, I heard leaves crunching on the top of the hogback and a split second later a deer started walking down the side of the hollow. I could tell it was a buck as soon as he came into view. He was on a trail I wasn't really expected them to use but would present me a great shot. I could hear him making a guttural "popping" sound as he walked closer...he came to my stand like he was on a string.

As he got to me I drew and he stopped like it was scripted...I watched as the arrow buried itself right where I was focused on. The buck put his tail up and ran about 20 yards, stopped and looked back...he then proceeded to walk away. He appeared to be staggering a slight bit and I thought he would fall over right there (I had another buck do the exact thing)...didn't happen. Now I'm questioning my shot. A couple minutes later I hear a crash in the direction he went.

To be on the safe side I waited 30 minutes before coming down out of my stand...watching 3 more deer lower in the hollow. Once on the ground I checked the arrow...good pink blood. I left the arrow and went back to my truck to return an hour later. I returned with my Dad to help track (which has been customary since I killed my first deer) and we found no blood on the ground by the arrow. I then went to where he stopped...blood all over. We followed a good blood trail about 60 yards and then it trickled down to a couple drops...but about 5 yards away was a brown lump.

Congrats man! Where are you in central PA? I've been hunting locally in Franklin and Huntingdon counties, and up north in Clearfield county. Unfortunately it didn't happen for me this year in archery season.

Dang man, next year you'll have to give her the license manual with all the seasons listed so she knows when to schedule a vacation.

Congrats Brandon. :thumb:

Thanks Ted!

Thanks man! Sorry to hear you weren't able to connect this season...there is always late season after Christmas if you can brave the weather. To answer your question, I live and hunt in Perry County.

Thanks for the compliment...and congrats on the doe!
The buck in my area were mostly nocturnal in the beginning of the season. The first buck I saw on stand (had plenty on the camera) was during the third week. It was a fairly predictable rut this year...started to pick up around Halloween and this past week was prime, it got better as it went. Saturday was the first day I saw this particular buck.

yeah i hunted the first week of november non stop and seen nothing i thought the rut would be great and see alot of action but it wasnt

I talked to a few people that had similar situations. I am glad the deer were moving so well in my area.

Not bad, nice set of woods ya got there. I'd love to get teh chance to go hunting up in PA

Whats a hog back btw

Like 03 said, a hogback is a hill or small ridge.

Thanks for the compliments, its a regular PA hardwood forest...oaks, hickorys, beech, birch and poplar (poplar is what is most visible in the pic) with a few cedars and white pines thrown in.

Whats drawing you to want to hunt in PA...I'm just curious?

Thanks Wes.

Just hear they have alot of deer, and when I used to watch hunting shows back in the day I remember seeing PA alot. Seemed like the guys on the show had good enough luck, so that means I would to, right?! :D

Haha, yeah maybe :D
In PA you would be hard pressed to find deer on public land due to the recent deer management plans...their new plan is better, but they drastically reduced deer numbers from what they once were. One postitve is their antler restrictions (we are seeing larger/more mature buck), I wish they would up it to 4 points/side statewide.

If I were you I'd save my travel loney and find a good farm in KY to hunt...you guys have some monsters down there.

Congrats man!:thumb: I totally missed out on a 12 point this weekend:(

Thanks for the compliment. Sorry to hear of your miss...it sucks when that happens.

You wanna come here and hunt and everybody around here goes to Illinois to hunt we have some nice deer were I live but it is becuase most of the bigger deer hunters with in 20 miles of here lets the bucks grow the best we can but we never have any over 160 there is a few 130's and 140's and once in a blue moon we have a 150 wondering around but everybody is after it so he has to be really smart to get by, our bucks gen's and out of towners and pouchers wont let us grow something really worth hunting after but here is the biggest buck ever that has been taking around here 165 12 point
