pump rub. nuts.

What have you guys been doing that doesnt involve buying a whole new transfer case half? Obviously im going to do eric's kit, but whats the consensus on JB welding the hole shut, or something to that extent?

Also, is there anything else inside that you guys are replacing on "high-mile" (200k) transfer cases?

Found a new rear case half for $165, for that price its not worth screwing around with mickey-mouse fixes. Even comes with a new bushing and front output shaft bearing too.

Anything else that should be replaced inside when I rebuild the thing?

I also recently noticed that I sometimes get a decent clunk when coming to a stop or pulling away from a stop sign. I just ignored it ("whatever, the truck still moves under its own power and goes down the highway fine, it cant be that serious") like I ignore most other noises/quirks on my truck but now that I think about it, I wonder if there are more worn out parts in the transfer case that I should replace while Im in there???

I havent taken it apart yet, but Id rather just have all the parts/bearings/etc ready to go than have my truck sitting on the lift while Im waiting for more parts etc..

Eric sells a rebuild kit that has all the snap rings and bearings etc.... Might be worth having on hand when you tear her down....also I have seen many of the "slider bushings" wear down ... I think that's what they are called. They go on the coupling on the main shaft. Also I would order new shift forks both mode and range. I see those wear all the time especially after pump rub

Just ordered the "deluxe bearing/seal kit" and pump rub kit from Eric. So looks like im into it for a little over $400 (new rear case half, pump rub kit, bearing/seal kit), plus fluid. Oh well, 200k miles what're ya gonna do..

I put black silicone over my hole a year and a half ago and has been good. I too have a nice thud feel when taking off from a dead stop, feels like slop somewhere but just have been putting up with it for a while.

I got the replacement case half and parts from Eric.

The replacement case half is aluminum...supposedly Ive heard some people say GM changed to an aluminum case to help pump rub, due to aluminum being harder than magnesium...whats the deal with that?

Also, ive "heard" (I forget where) that Eric's pump rub kit doesnt work on the "new" aluminum rear case halves due to the redesigned aluminum case half being thicker in the areas commonly effected by pump rub.......anyone know what the deal is with that?

I know I could just take it apart and find out for myself, but if I need extra parts or different parts due to the new aluminum case half, I want to get them ahead of time rather than have my truck stuck on the lift waiting for parts.

I suggest calling Eric and asking him. I hadn't head they switched to aluminum, that's good to know. Especially if it won't need the fix.

When I need to do mine again... well, story time. Feel free to skip the rest of this useless post.

I got pump rub (@ ~260k miles) while on a road trip. Put some black silicon on the hole and forgot about it for way too long. While Mike L. was doing my trans (@ 273k), I had him put in the pump rub kit, and, against his advice / better judgment, just epoxy the hole. Been fine like that for 2 years and 30k.

But, Mike is not known to be wrong, so I suspect at some point, I will need a new case half. If so, I may just do the aluminum one and nix the pump rub kit. If it only goes another 200k, I'll be over 500k on the truck (assuming I still have it).

I noticed mine at 200k also, but the truck my wife had happened around 180k. Mine got fixed with a new case half, hers just got jbweld. Was still working at 200k when we traded it in. It got totalled and went to a boneyard at 205k, so I don't know how it did after that.
I hadn't heard that GM changed the rear housing to aluminum, but its been a while since we sold one too. The last one we did here at work went on with a Merchant pump rub kit, and as far as I know it didn't have any problems

Why don't you take the pump rub kit and see if it drops in the rear case half? Then we will all know for sure. :thumb:

I have done no less than 4 transfercase rebuilds using the "new aluminum case" and Eric's pump rub kit. Drops in no problems. One thing I have had happen on one of those 4 is that the casting for where the circlip is that retains the rear most bearing ( the one you must "spread" under the rubber boot) isn't very great and required a touch with a dremel to get the clip to sit in correctly. This was maybe a year ago and seemed like an isolated case (no pun intended ;)
