I just bought a 2005 duramax lly not running. The previous owner said that it just shut off at 45 mph. No warning signs, no knocking, no rattles, no noises. My code reader says no codes. I dont think its fuel related at all, I even sprayed a shot of ether into the intake just to see if it would fire, it would not, not at all. The motor turns over with no noises, but sounds like its low on compression, or only has compression on maybe a couple of cylinders. I checked the FICM harness rub on the alt. bracket, but it looks fine. The truck is bone stock and has been well taken care of, Im just not sure where to start. Thanks in advance for any help, I hope I gave enough information.

Find someone with a scan tool and check cranking fuel pressure, make sure you have atleast 12.7 volts while cranking.

you can pull all the glow plugs and crank the truck over and check for fuel coming out of the cylinders this indicates a stuck injector and will cause low fuel press while cranking.

do some searching on crank but wont fire on this site and you should find some great info.

Dont spray anymore ether you may cause more damage. The more info from a proper scan tool you can get the better as this will rule out and pin point the issue.

I know the ether is a no no, BUT, wouldnt it eliminate the rail pressure causing the no start? If it tried to fire at all on ether, then I would be ready to try to find a fuel issue. Im worried about the way it turns over so freely. I guess I need to go get a diesel compression tester.

It turns over by hand, freely?

Yep do a comp test and if that comes back good check into the reluctor wheel coming loose. not very common problem but can cause a no start issue.

no, turns over freely with the starter, sounds like very little compression. we pulled a fuse in my buddy's dmax so it wouldnt start, the sound of it turning over is consistant and sounds normal like regular compression. when mine turns over it sounds like a gas motor tuning over with all but two of the spark plugs removed. I dont know if im making any sense, but it sounds like no compression and that scares me. Im going to go try to turn it over by hand and do the same to his motor and see what that tells me. I dont have a diesel compression tester, maybe thats next on the list.

just went outside and turned the motor over easily with a 1/2" socket wrench.
thats not good. deffinetly no compression. what now, sheared cam pin? lost time and bent valves?

Pull the glow plugs and crank it over, you should be able tell if there is no/ low comp on one or more cylinders, heck even just stick something in the hole like some gum

Ya it sounds cheap but if ya don't have any compression

A bent push rod would prob make a noise
