Anyone know which of these 2005 stock air filters are different?
The square filter is from a 2005 GMC 3500
The round filter is from a 2005 Silervado 2500HD
Both are LLY's
Which is the better stock set-up?

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the round style has more filter area and is superior. I'm only going by what I remember to have read, so please don't take what I say as gospel.

The round filter is actually used from 06+, but GM offerred it as an upgrade for 04-05 LLY's that would overheat so there are quite a few 04-05 LLY trucks with them running around. The round filter flows FAR superior to the square flat panel air filter that the 04-05 trucks came with from the factory, but requires a tune flash to use as it uses a larger diameter tube to the mouthpiece. You also need the turbo mouthpiece from the truck with a round filter to run it as the connection of the mouthpiece is different between the two.

You will also need to retune both trucks for the filter change.

What he said. The rpund filter is FAR better than the square one, but the round filter I believe uses a 5" tube where the MAF goes, and the square one uses a 4" tube. So the ECm has to be flashed for the change or else it will pop MAF codes.

OK so the switch is complete. I did this after replacing headgaskets, installing arp's, a MRBP 3" downpipe, egr block plate and installed the LBZ mouthpiece. The truck runs like a dog. no throttle response. I put on, temporarily, an edge only to see boost. The truck feels like it is not making power and/or the turbo is not lighting. In stock tune terrible, in drive tune lvl 3 it runs much better but not super. Is this because the truck needs to be flash tuned? or am I missing something else? Only code is for egr. On a side not I did also swap MAF sensors. So the MAF that was in the truck is still in the truck.

So I need to update my sig to read 2005 GMC 3500 LLY egr block,ARP Studs, 3" MBRP downpipe LBZ mouthpiece and for the moment Edge Chipw/Attitude otherwise stock for the moment

The dealer should be able to flash it. They might charge you though.

Or you could get a tune from one of the vendors on here via EFI Live and have the MAF scaled for the tube.

What are you doing with your old setup?

The old set up is going on the old truck. The old truck is being sold. BTW from the looks of your signature I am going to be very close to your set up with the exception of a 4" exhaust. The exhaust will not be straight though.

I wish I would have went with the 4 inch exhaust. My 5 inch is not the tone I'm looking for.

You're going to have to get a 4" then. The 5" will always have a deeper tone.
