2005 2500 puzzle

Posted a little info on this in my introduction post, but if ya missed it here it is. I’m putting together a 2005 gmc 2500 dmax. Got two of these trucks that were already taken apart when I picked them up so I’ve got no clue how they go back together. Just gonna try and figure it out, how hard could it be? Hahah

Luckily the service truck I get to drive home everyday is a 2005 Chevy 3500 dmax. Hopefully I can reference this some putting the gmc back together?

Don’t know anything about these trucks really so bare with me, I’ll try and search the little things I run into.

Here’s where I’m at now after a week...
so the mechanic that was swapping the lly for an lbz got locked up in the process. So far I’ve pulled the lbz, trans, and transfer case all at once (pretty nerve racking without an extra hand).

So I guess the next step is putting the original lly back into the truck? Is there anything I’ll want to do/replace before I stick it back in?

Any general words of advice are appreciated as well!

I pulled my LBZ drivetrain in once piece as well. The cherry picker is capable of the weight. But it sure is scary! I bought new chains and everything just to make sure.

Why are you putting the lly back in? why not figure out the lbz?

With them out, in my case, I had to replace the oil pan gaskets. So, I would look for leaks, and do things like that with the engine out...

The lbz is actually going in a 89 v3500! Gotta get this truck put back together so I can have something to drive once that project gets rolling!

Definitely gonna have to replace those along with the pan, got a little dented up during the whole shipping procedure. Gonna go ahead and replace the fuel filter, the seal at the end of the transfer case, gotta replace the transmission fluid dipstick tube too. It looks like a press in fit?

Any recommendations on a good quality fuel filter?

Get a lift pump and do your filters in the frame and delete the factory housing.

I’ll have to look into that, changing the filter while it’s jammed in there looks like a pain.

Factory heads are known to leak and cause issues. Bypass the FICM and delete the factory filter head. Lift pump like an air dog or fass will give you your priming and filtering.

Did some searching around, is it okay to bypass the FICM on an lly?

I think what he means is to not run the fuel thru the FICM. I personally would not do that on a DD truck.

I would use another style filter setup on the swap truck, but not on your DD.
I would use the factory filter head along with a Kennedy lift pump on the DD.
If your filter head is leaking, you can buy a new one for a decent price. That would be the easiest way to go about it.

I had to replace my dipstick also, bought it from the dealer... It is just pushed in there. I broke the original one when trying to remove it, and so had to get a new one. My oil pans were leaking so I re-did the gaskets with rtv. With my engine out, I also tapped the exhaust temp sensor, removed my egr, and changed the downpipe to a better model.

Any recommendations on a good quality fuel filter?

I just use the stock filter head on my LBZ, and bout a Wix filter for it.

Made a little bit of progress on the truck so far, not much but enough to keep me motivated haha.

Should of took more before pics, but I’ve got the interior of the truck put back together. Luckily he hadn’t started tearing into the wiring too much from the swap he was trying.

Put on some new motor mounts and found some frame brackets for the mounts from a local pull apart. Going off of this website for torque specs, hopefully they’re credible

Got a transmission mount on the way. Trying to get this thing ready to put back into the frame.

I’m going to replace the output shaft seal before I put it back in.

My biggest question to any of you guys out there, is there anything I want to make sure I do before I put it in? Wiring, brackets, etc? I’m new at this so anything helps haha

Jumped the gun, put in the new seal.

Couple beers with the boys and it went in smooth, motor trans and transfer case

I guess bolt up all the brackets next? Then maybe figure out all the plumbing shit in

Looks like its coming along, any progress is better than no progress.

Merchant auto has an app that has a bunch of torque specs, not sure that it has all of them, but it can be handy, has a ton of other info as well

Mounted the cross member and transmission mount. Bolted in the motor mounts and torqued to specs. Gonna have to find some hardware to mount up the front diff.

Put on the drivers side front clip, to start messing with the electrical. This isn’t gonna screw me down the road is it?

This tube broke off, I think it’s part of the egr? The treads that a stud went into are toast to I guess I’ll either drill and tap it a size up or helicoil it.

My big thing was oil leaks. I re-did the gasket on the oil pans while the engine was out, as they were leaking quite a bit.

Cover the leaks while the engine is out would my my suggestion.

I wouldn't assemble any more until you get it running.
If more than 100k miles I'd get a new water pump and front main seal in that thing.

The guy I bought it from told me 220xxx, guess I’ll find out.
I’ve got everything for the truck, not buying any upgrades at the moment, just putting everything back together to make sure it runs and drives well.

I’ve got a post in the new members section that explains it a little better.
Original Bcm is still in the truck. He hadn’t tore into any of the electronics yet.

He was swapping the LBZ into the 06, I’m putting the LLY back into the 06. Pretty much reversing all he had going on.

You do realize the 06 LLY and LBZ are the same engine, right? It should've been a straight swap if that's what you're doing.

Now, if you're swapping an 04-05 LLY engine into the 06 LBZ, thats a different story.

Not swapping, putting the lbz in an 89 Chevy. The lly is going back into the original truck. Just reversing the swap the guy was doing.

The point still stands... if the truck is truly an 06 what’s the 8th digit of the vin? 2 or d? If d it’s an lbz. If 2 it’s technically an lly but is identical to an lbz except tuning. Should have 6 speed and all.
