I have an early 01 truck (11/00 on door sticker) I tried to put a 02 ecm out of a parts truck in my 01 and it would crank but not start. So I put mine back in and it ran fine. I am trying to put the 02 ecm in because of fuel mileage the 02 truck got alot better mpg than my 01. I was wondering if I put the 02 bcm in my truck if then the 02 ecm will work? The only difference is the 02 is an ls crew cab and mine is an lt extended cab with more options. Would they still work with a 02 bcm?

Put the 02 ECM back in and do the theft learn. Turn the key on and crank it for a second, then stop but leave the key on, then wait for about 10 minutes and the security light should go out, shut the key off for 5 seconds, and repeat the above 2 more times. Then it should start. I BOUBT changing the ECm will help your milage any though. Also make sure you are swapping in an ECM from a matching truck. Since your truck is an 01, it should most likely be a federal emissions truck. If it is make sure the 02 was from a federal truck as well.

Where do I check to see if they are federal emissions? I know that service #'s on the ecms did not match. Thats why I was wondering if changing the bcm also would make it work

Neither of the trucks have an egr they are both federal. It doesn't matter that the service numbers on the sticker on the computer doesn't match at all. If so I'm going to try the vats relearn and see if it runs.

Ok I put in the 02 computer and did the vats relearn and what do u know it fired right up! Thanks a lot for the how to very helpful. I seem to notice a lower idle, more performance, and better gas mileage. I think the early 01 tune is very restrictive cause they were on the first duramax's produced. For the first time I figured my highway mpg to be over 20 mpg (20.8). I used a Gps to track mileage cause I have 285/75/16 on it and it throws the speedo off. According to my incorrect odometer it would be like 18.8 mpg. I'll try to let everyone know what I get combined city and highway I just topped it off to the cap. I use to get if I was lucky 12-14 mpg combined

01's idled at 600 hot(180 engine temp), 02-07 classic(LBZ) idle at 680 hot. So if your 02 ECM is idling lower, then your 01 ECM wasn't a stock 01 or had some issues with it. 2001 was the ONLY year the idle speed was set at 600, 02-07 are 680, and 07(LMM)-10 are 720.
