How many people launch in second gear vs. first? I've heard that launching in 2nd gear will help your 60' and 1st isn't needed; however, is it true that it is harder on your converter and trans? I run a 1056 and it's pretty damn easy to blow through the brakes.

It totally depends on the truck I run NO TOW HAUL with 1st gear and cut 1.64 60's... I think it makes more sense running a 1st gear delete TCM with a 6 speed as opposed to a 5 speed

I also run 1st NO T/H with small 275-55-16's. I've used the 1st delete and it did nothing for the truck, It seems like my truck does not like anything other then the stock TCM tune. It might not be related or anything, but I did fry my 1057 while using 1st delete. I was not too fond of the clunk while staging either. Some trucks it works for the better. I dont think it matters 5/6 speed though

There have been a few trucks that have developed trans problems with second gear launches. It does have some advantages on some trucks, but it's risky. You can stage higher before walking through the brakes, and it appears to be more gentle on the IFS. It works well on slippery tracks too.

My tcm is tuned to delete 1st gear with t/h on. Haven't had the chance to run in 1st yet. I assumed using t/h is the way to go when racing b/c it increases line pressure?

my 1st delete tube used t/h also , i got 6-7 launches before my converter started having fits. i like it it felt like it had promise but i dont know if i will ever run it again . t/h does not increase line pressure it only changes converter lock up tables and shift points .

True but for anyone that doesn't know, at WOT the converter locks in 2nd gear whether it's in t/h or not. I've heard of some guys running t/h on and some dont use t/h. Just do some testing and see what you come up with. I was curious about the 1st delete but It's doen't seem to help as much as it hurts.

I launch Wendy in 2nd gear without t/h since the conv. locks later. I tried it with t/h a couple of passes and didn't like it at all. My 60fts times where worse.

I know I could hurt my transmission, but that is what I have Mike for :D:rofl:

If I break it he will fix it

You are misinformed. You cannot raise line pressure in the Ally without directly modifying the pressure regulator spring.

I tried the 2nd gear start with my truck, it did not go so well. I launched the truck under full throttle after having success with several partial throttle launches then----BANG----the truck got out about 15 to 20 feet and it down shifted into first. Broke my output shaft. So be careful. Good luck, a lot of people have no problems at all starting in second gear.
