Okay so I'm getting ready to pull for my first time. Couple questions that I couldn't find much clarification on. The plan is to pull in 4lo 3rd gear, and I don't think that I could pull in 4th gear and stay ontop of my charger, especially with stock gearing.

My question is should I start pulling in 3rd gear from the start? Would I have problems spooling and/or damaging my converter? I also have a lockup box that I plan on using to unlock toward the last couple feet of the pull.

Next question is my rev limiter is 3400 and peak hp is 2400-2800. Should I talk to my tuner about raising my rev limiter and adding some more fuel up top?

Tires I will be using are pro comp all terrains- 285/75R16 - 32.8"

2nd gear start, no reason to start in 3rd unless you cant spool your charger. raise the limiter up for sure you want rpm and ground speed!

I did 3rd gear starts last season and loved it. I was about 550-575hp and running 35" tires with 4:10 gears. On a tight track I usually ran about 3600-3700rpm's and on looser tracks as high as 3950rpm's. On the tighter tracks I would unlock the converter at the end of the track.

I always thought 3rd gear starts are for if you have a bad defuel (I know a lmm like that), id stay with 2nd. why do you say third for a big charger?
I had trouble getting mine to come up in 2nd gear. Would just push through the brakes, needed 3rd gear to get some rpm then it will come up and allow you to leave the line with as much boost as you want!

Okay so next question is should I build boost and go or just roll out... And my tucks around 550 hp on my pulling tune, should I do anything to my truck to prevent broken parts? Right now the weak point will be the driveshaft and axles? What's the benefit of welding the differential case to the axle tubes? Or is it even beneficial at my hp level. Aluminum driveshaft.

youre axles and drive shafts should be safe as long as you don't bounce hard or have something go wrong. I usually boost it pretty good to get wheel speed going:thumb:

You better build boost. Even a stock charger will take awhile to light if you don't build boost. And you weld the pumpkin to the shafts so you don't twist it around and end up having it point straight. Not ever seen a duramax do that, but some trucks have

Edit: looks like I'm launching second gear and I'll raise my limiter to 3800 so if it bounces it doesn't go about 4k. Looks like plenty of stock trucks go higher than that with little to no problems reported.
