Has anyone installed a double din radio head unit in their truck in place of the factory 1.5 din unit? Just wondering about the modification to the dash that most manufacturers say needs to be done to complete an install. I don't want to have to cut up the dash behind the head unit to much, not at all really. I'd like to install an aftermarket nav/backup camera unit in place of my stock crap radio. Any thoughts? Thanks for any advise.

You can do it like Trevor said and replace the cage for the newer radio, but I'm pretty sure your AC/Heat controls will be moved so they will have to get either modded or you will have to get new dash bezel.

Or you can take out the original radio, take the cage off of it, cut it up and mount it to the new double din head unit. Depending on what head unit you get, will tell you how much you need to modify behind it. I've done 2 installs, and both had to grind away at the metel bracket behind the head unit. Theres many threads on a few chevy sites with good write ups. Google it and look on fullsizechevy.com

I did it.Need to trim dash surround to fit unit, then add side filler pieces. For my actual unit mounting(I work in a machine shop),I used .500" aluminum for the side mounts.then used the oem locks and mounted to the aluminum.
Hardest part besides stuffing all the wires back in,was the trimming of the dash to fit nicely.I have pics somewhere on here or DF.

i just bought a single din with a flip out 7.5" screen. much easier lol :D
I have one of those in my 97 passat tdi, retracting action died on it.now I have to push it back in.:DI figured the harsher ride of the truck would do it in faster than my car.
