so im looking to buy a diesel truck. i like the duramax the best, and am up in the air on which year range to buy. i hear the 07 and up rides the nicest, but has all the emission crap. i also like the 06s, cause they have the strong 6 speed tranny, and the upgraded trans, but without all the emissions crap. on the other hand, they are much desired and probably tough to get a hold of. what years to you guys like, and were there every any transmission upgrades besides 2005 where i know i can add even more power before having to beef her up?

2005 will be the LLY. It will be backed by a 5 speed Allison.

2006 will either be the '06 LLY (detuned LBZ) or the LBZ. The LBZ and '06 LLY consist of stronger rods, different pistons, and a different crank. They also use Bosch electronics and can hold about 2K more of rail psi. Both were backed by the 6 speed Alli with tapshift. The 6 speed has been proven to hold more power in stock form.

2007 Classics will be the same as an '06.

2007.5 LMM's will be the same as an LBZ except it has a DPF. It is still backed by the same 6 speed Alli. Although the body style changed the chassis remained the same so ride quality shouldn't differ.

to me it comes down to esthetics, which one do you like the looks of, inside and out. The OBS to NBS's are very different inside and out.

As mentioned ride quality should be the same, but the nbs will have the mentioned aftertreatment, which can easily be removed/deleted.

Although, when my truck completely stock coming back from Georgia, I was averaging 19mpg in some shitty snowy weather.

soo. now down to the other side of the matter. what is involved in buying an lmm (07.5 and up) and deleting the egr and dpf? i'll have to pay someone to do the work, so how much does that usually run? will any chip then work, or will i need a custom tune or certain tuner?

Usually cost around 1000 to delete dpf and block egr. That is tunes, exhaust and blocker plate. Not any chip will work and they quit meking chips that delete dpfs. Efi is the only way to do it unless you find a used dpf delete tuner.
I personally would go with the lbz cause the epa is cracking down on all the dpf delete crap and pushing more emission stuff.
