07 Allison Temp Worries

I have an 07 Classic 2500 LBZ, completely stock, 86,000 miles bought it new. I've never had any issues with the tranny getting hot before 3 weeks ago. Left home pulling 5th wheel (11,000 lbs) after about 6 miles running 45-50, I kept hearing fans running then looked over at tranny temp gauge and was around 240. Pulled off to get fuel and it was up to 250. I let is sit to cool down for a while. I also put it in 4 wheel drive coming out my drive then take it out when I hit the hard top. I assumed it hadn't disengaged completely and thats why the temps got so high. While stopped I reengaged 4wd then disengaged backing up to make sure that it was not in 4wd when I left. Cooled down to about 210 then got on the 4 lane and cooled down to 200 and stayed there. Had tranny fluid and filter changed when I got back.

Left out again last weekend pulling 5th wheel, made it about 150 miles then started up mountain 4 miles 8% grade running 55 started going up again. Stopped after topping the mountain to let it cool, got up to about 230 this time. Stayed there next 10 miles to camp. Return trip Coming back down grade had in tow haul mode, using engine braking tranny temp got to 205 then came back down. Then ran fine at 200 degrees first 170 miles got off 4 lane for last 6 miles running 45-50 and started going up again. Got up to about 240 when we got home.

I checked both cooler lines from tranny and they were hot. Cooler lines were replaced about 3 months ago. Thats about as far as I know on what to check to diagnose. Truck was never straining or working hard even on the mountains. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Did you recently service the trans? Check to make sure it isn't over the hot full mark, that will cause air in the fluid and will result in overheating.

If you have high mileage, you may have a converter clutch going out. I see a lot of that on the LBZ.

Yeah had it changed at Repair shop after first heat issue. Checked it the first time when it got hot and was in the normal range before having it serviced. I'll check it this evening when I go out. We drove it around the mountains unhooked between trips and didn't have any issues.

I don't think 86,000 should be considered high mileage. I hope nothing major just had to replace turbo last summer.

What are the outside temps? Also is your cooling stack clean? What fluid did the shop use? My stocker keeps getting hotter and hotter, I assume that to be because its on its last leg.

Cooling stock is clean. Not using tow/haul mode when getting hot. Wow hard to believe anything in diesel would be high mileage at 86000. I'm not questioning your opinion just amazed. If I have to replace something in there I believe I'll be switching brands. Been diehard Chevy for 20 years.

You might be sorry if you switch brands.

What can I do to diagnose the problem? Driving last night stayed around 160 without anything behind.

I think if you can read live data from the transmission you should have the info you need.

the quickest most cost effective way I can think to get the ability to do this is through the use of an "AREOFORCE INTERCEPTOR" gauge.

it hooks up under your dash to the obd2 port and communicates or rather reads pretty much ALL THE DATA the computers do

I think the key data you'd be looking for here is transmission input speed, transmission output speed, slip speed, slip rpm, and torque management.

I know the areoforce interceptor will read all of those parameters.

You can get the gauge for about $220-$250 shipped, it's a digital gauge and comes with several choices of background colors and font colors, and 2 gauge face colors, and even has a logo screen to choose from that has a duramax logo, so if you choose, when the gauge turns on you can program it to say "duramax diesel"
:woott:

IIRC, it reads 104 parameters on my other rig, it can be set up to monitor boost, egt and I believe rail pressure, it will do a cyclic scan of 8 parameters at a set time that you choose per screen and will more accurately depict your actual temps than the factory gauges in the dash using stepper motors

a few other key items the areoforce monitors are:
engine coolant temps
trans coolant/fluid temp
engine oil temp
engine oil pressure
intake air temp
intake manifold temp
fuel level in % or gallon
MPG
injector duty, injector timing
tq converter status (Locked or Un locked)
MPH
and so much more

This gauge is very cool and it also has the ability to scan, retrieve and reset triggered trouble codes

It's really a handy tool to have in the cab, the areoforce is one way you could find out on your own for this issue and many more

And yes I have one, in a different rig. I plan to replace my current gauge set up with aeroforce interceptor gauges as soon as I can, it's that good:D

here's some pics of the gauge for ya
:D

here's how it displays, 2 parameters at one time. You can set it up to cycle up to 4 screens (one screen at a time for anywhere from 1sec per screen to 10sec per screen) for a total of 8 parameters, or just have the screen still and select any parameters at any time with buttons to toggle the parameters

the gauge also has the ability to set up auxiliary fans to come on at set temps, or it can turn on or off an e-fan (for you drag race guys in between staging) you can set RPM's to trigger a built in shift light, trigger switch for nitrous, or set it up to trigger the built in lights as a warning for extreme temps, it really is a utile tool

This has nothing to do with his problem...

Mike said his tq converter clutch could be going out/slipping...

this gauge has the ability to show if that is indeed happening

it will show trans input speed, trans output speed, converter slip speed, converter slip percentage, just about everything I can think of a guy would need to know to tell if the converter clutch was failing

Any chance it could be the cooler, stopped up or just need a bigger one without something internal.
