not sure if this is in the right place or not. i have an 06 lbz that has been mysteriously using coolant with no external signs of a leak for the past year months roughly. seems to only do it in the cold months though. the other day it started pushing it out the degas bottle. it takes a long time to come up to temp. once up to temp it is fine all day. never over heats or looses heat from heater output. tested for blown head gasket with co2 tester and passed showing no head gasket problem. tried bypassing the coolant to the egr cooler and still same problem. was going to try t/stats next. also read a little about oil cooler as possible cause. any help would be greatly appreciated.

truck is stock. only has air raid cold air intake and 4" mbrp exhaust for now. still waxes cummins and p strokes though lol

Sounds like a possible headgasket issue. Not all headgasket failures will puke coolant out of the overflow or push coolant into the oil. Some of them can have the same symptoms as yours and simply be a minor flaw in the gasket.

If it is a minor headgasket, it will likely push coolant in the winter due to the temperature/pressure difference rather than the summer. The coolant takes longer to warm but the pressure is there from the gasket. Once the pressure reaches operating psi, the coolant will continue to increase in temp and overpressure causing it to run out of the overflow.

Check the radiator hose clamps, all of them. I had one that was bottomed out, and leaked just enough to leave a wet spot on the driveway overnight in the winter, it never lost coolant the other 8 months of the year.

If you used the color changing fluid for testing for a leak, don't believe the results. I tried it on an '06 LBZ 2 weeks ago, test showed negative for a leak, but I found a blown head gasket anyway. I hope your coolant loss is found, and simple. Good luck.

OK got all the parts to do the head gaskets. But now very confused. Once the wife stopped using the heater it quite puking out the overflow and has no issues. She tried to tell me it did this last winter also and was fine all summer. But i figured she was nuts. This is very strange. As a side note I am an ASE master tech on gas engines and have 20 years experience in the field. However diesels are a new realm to me.

Do you tow heavy loads? Could be the rear cover leaking.

Mine was the heater hose or whatever it's called. Never had any leaks on the floor of the garage but it was leaking. Mechanic thought it was head gaskets but we did a leak down test and it was the hose. You could check that too.

That may just be a coincidence and have more to do with ambient temperature changes.

Try adding pressure to the cooling system?

Not sure if it applies to the lbz, but the coolant line that goes to the turbo. Have heard of leaks there and they don't show up because it burns off.

I've noticed that my LBZ doing this as well. Not sure where the coolant is going but it's going somewhere...
